LESSON 1: Weather Patterns in the Philippines

DRAW THIS!
What is the weather today? Draw your answer inside the box.

LESSON TIME
The Philippines experiences different kinds of weather at certain months
of the year. Sometimes, it feels very warm and on the other days, it feels cold.
Some people consider the weather in doing their daily activities, while others
depend so much on it.
 WIND
One factor that greatly affects the weather in an area is the wind. The
unequal heating of Earth’s surfaces affects the movement of the air above
them. Warm air rises, while cold air sinks. The space left by warm air is then
filled in by cooler air. This movement of air forms the wind. The land surface of
the Earth absorbs heat fast and releases heat easily. Hence, the air over land

surfaces during daytime becomes warm faster. Meanwhile, the water surfaces
of Earth reflect more light rays than land surfaces do. Water molecules absorb
less light that is converted into heat. Thus, it takes a longer time for water to
heat up, but it can hold more heat because it has more spaces in between
molecules.
During daytime, warm air over land rises to the atmosphere. Cooler air,
which remains low in the atmosphere, from the sea and other bodies of water
moves in to fill up the space left by the warm air. The phenomenon is called
the sea breeze.
At night, the opposite happens. It takes a longer time for water to cool
down or release heat. The air over bodies of water stays warmer. As warm air
from the sea rises, the cooler air from the land surface moves in to take its
place. This is called the land breeze.
The movement of air, like sea breeze and land breeze, help change the
weather in an area.

 WIND SYSTEMS
Due to Earth’s rotation, winds
are deflected to the east and the
west producing wind belts. At the
equator, rising moist, warm air forms
clouds that release a great amount of
rainfall. Winds at the equator are very
calm and are called doldrums.
Trade winds are winds close to
the equator. Trade winds blow from
the northeast to the southeast.
Regions where trade winds blow have
steady winds and very few storms.
Horse latitude is about 30 degrees north and south latitudes. The world’s
deserts are found in this region because it has very little rainfall.
Prevailing westerlies are about 30 to 60 degrees north and south
latitudes. Regions with prevailing westerlies have alternate stormy and fine
weathers.
Polar easterlies are 60 degrees latitude to the poles. Polar easterlies move
westward.

 WIND SYSTEMS IN THE PHILIPPINES

The location of the Philippines contributes to its prevailing wind systems.
It is surrounded by big bodies of water like the Pacific Ocean, Celebes Sea, and
West Philippine Sea. The differences in the capacity of land and water to
absorb and release heat cause differences in temperature. These temperature
differences cause the three wind systems in our country.
The monsoons are seasonal winds blowing over large areas that change
direction with the season instead of day and night.
The northeast monsoons, known as “ Hanging Amihan,” blows from
Siberia from the months of November to February. This brings the cold

Kapwa
temperature to the Philippines. This is because it is the winter season in the
northern hemisphere.
The southwest monsoon, known as “Hanging Habagat,” blows from
Australia from the months of July to September. The winter season in Australia
causes the rainy weather.
The trade winds blow from the North Pacific Ocean to the Philippines
from March to early May. Trade winds bring rain only to the eastern part of the
country.

 CLIMATE AND SEASONS IN THE PHILIPPINES

As described by PAGASA, the climate of the country is tropical and
maritime. This means that it is characterized by relatively high temperature,
high humidity, and abundant rainfall. This climate may be divided into two
major seasons: wet and dry.
The wet or rainy season is experienced
from June to November. This is brought about
by the Hanging Habagat. During these months,
the country experiences numerous storms,
typhoons, and heavy rainfall that come from
the southwest.
Meanwhile, the dry seasons happens
from December to May. It is caused by
Hanging Amihan and the trade winds the
country is exposed to. The dry season may be
subdivided into the cool dry season, which
happens from December to February, and the
hot dry season from March to May.
During cool season, rainfall may still be occasionally experienced in the
country. The winds at this time are the coolest throughout the year. The hot
dry season, however, brings about the least amount of rainfall during the year.
The winds are usually warm to hot during this time.

LESSON 2: Seasonal Activities in the Philippines

LESSON TIME
As the country experiences two kinds of season in a year, there are
activities that are appropriate for each season.

 WET SEASON
Personal activities like household cleaning and
repairs, washing of clothes, gardening, doing errands,
and the like, can still be done during the rainy season.
However, one needs to be mindful of the weather for the
day to complete tasks that involve going outdoors.

season rice crops from June to November, while farmers from the south plant
their wet season crops from October/November to March/April.

 DRY SEASON
The months of the dry season experience
lower chance of rains, thus outdoor activities like
going on a picnic, swimming, biking, family outings,
and community parade are best scheduled during
this time. Dry rice crop planting in the northern part
of the country happens in the months of January to
May, while in the southern part of the country, it is
from May to November.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR EACH SEASON

 WET (RAINY) SEASON

Heavy rainfall, storms, and typhoons during this season can cause floods
and landslides. Everyone should stay indoors when it rains, especially during
storms or typhoons. Everyone should stay on higher ground to keep away from
sloping areas to be safe from floods and landslides. Families also need to make
sure that their food and water supplies are enough for a couple of days.
Everyone should wear proper clothes for the cold weather.

 DRY SEASON
Individuals need to stay extra hydrated during the dry season when the
weather is mostly hot. Due to the intense heat of the sun, one has to use
sunblock when going out. Wear light and cool clothing during this season.

VALUING
Seasons are so important for the continuation of life. The change of seasons allows
for many different types of work, food, celebrations and recreation. Weather can be both
a helpful and destructive force for people and their property. How can one stay safe and well
during rainy and dry seasons?

Winds happen because of the uneven heating of the Earth’s surfaces.

Se breeze happens during daytime, while land breeze happens at
nighttime.
Different wind systems happen in different parts of the Earth.
The monsoons are seasonal winds blowing over large areas of the
country.
Seasons in the Philippines are affected by three wind systems - namely,
northeast monsoon, southwest monsoon, and trade winds.
The northeast monsoon or the hanging amihan blows from Siberia during
the months of November to February. This brings cold temperature.
The southwest monsoon or the hanging habagat blows from Australia
from July to September. This causes the rainy weather.
Trade winds blow from the North Pacific Ocean to the Philippines in the
months of March to May.
The Philippines has only two seasons - wet (rainy) and dry.
Different activities may be done during the different seasons of the
country.
