LESSON 1: Weather Patterns in the Philippines
DRAW THIS!
What is the weather today? Draw your answer inside the box.
LESSON TIME
The Philippines experiences different kinds of weather at certain months
of the year. Sometimes, it feels very warm and on the other days, it feels cold.
Some people consider the weather in doing their daily activities, while others
depend so much on it.
WIND
One factor that greatly affects the weather in an area is the wind. The
unequal heating of Earth’s surfaces affects the movement of the air above
them. Warm air rises, while cold air sinks. The space left by warm air is then
filled in by cooler air. This movement of air forms the wind. The land surface of
the Earth absorbs heat fast and releases heat easily. Hence, the air over land
WIND SYSTEMS
Due to Earth’s rotation, winds
are deflected to the east and the
west producing wind belts. At the
equator, rising moist, warm air forms
clouds that release a great amount of
rainfall. Winds at the equator are very
calm and are called doldrums.
Trade winds are winds close to
the equator. Trade winds blow from
the northeast to the southeast.
Regions where trade winds blow have
steady winds and very few storms.
Horse latitude is about 30 degrees north and south latitudes. The world’s
deserts are found in this region because it has very little rainfall.
Prevailing westerlies are about 30 to 60 degrees north and south
latitudes. Regions with prevailing westerlies have alternate stormy and fine
weathers.
Polar easterlies are 60 degrees latitude to the poles. Polar easterlies move
westward.
LESSON TIME
As the country experiences two kinds of season in a year, there are
activities that are appropriate for each season.
WET SEASON
Personal activities like household cleaning and
repairs, washing of clothes, gardening, doing errands,
and the like, can still be done during the rainy season.
However, one needs to be mindful of the weather for the
day to complete tasks that involve going outdoors.
Farmers from the north of the country plant their wet
DRY SEASON
The months of the dry season experience
lower chance of rains, thus outdoor activities like
going on a picnic, swimming, biking, family outings,
and community parade are best scheduled during
this time. Dry rice crop planting in the northern part
of the country happens in the months of January to
May, while in the southern part of the country, it is
from May to November.
DRY SEASON
Individuals need to stay extra hydrated during the dry season when the
weather is mostly hot. Due to the intense heat of the sun, one has to use
sunblock when going out. Wear light and cool clothing during this season.
