U.S.

IMMIGRATION LAWS & REGULATIONS

It is critical that international students know and understand their responsibility to maintain their
legal status in the United States. Students must be aware of and comply fully with the following:

Please initial each section in the space provided to indicate your understanding. If you do not
understand inform the center director that you need assistance.

➢ I must maintain a valid passport at all times. ________ (Renew your passport 6 months
prior to its expiration date.)

➢ I must make sure my I-20 does not expire _______ (see program end date on your I-20).

➢ If my I-20 expires before I can complete my certificate program, I must apply for an I-
20 extension BEFORE the I-20 expires. (See your International Student Advisor for an
extension request. Your extension request should be submitted 15 - 30 days prior to the
expiration date of the Form I-20, so the extension process can be completed prior to
the expiration date on the document). ______

➢ I must register and attend FULL-TIME. ______

➢ I realize and understand, I am not allowed to work. _______

➢ I must get an updated signature on my I-20 from my International Student Advisor at

least once per calendar year. _______

➢ I must notify my International Student Advisor of any accompanying dependents in F-2

status and provide biographical information (i.e., full name, address. country of birth,
etc.) and immigration information (e.g. passport information, visa information. etc.)
regarding those dependents. ________

➢ I realize there are many international students at META Language School, and I know it
is very important to plan ahead. I will submit any requests 15 days in advance (e.g.,
vacations, transfers, I-20 renewals, I-20 copies, etc). _________

➢ I realize most of my requests at the META Language School will have to be processed
through the SEVIS system and I know some processing delays may occur. I will plan
ahead and submit my requests in a timely fashion that will allow for such. Finally. I
realize my failure to do this may result in falling out of status. __________

➢ If I wish to transfer to another school, I must complete the official Immigration transfer
process (note: the transfer process cannot be completed until the acceptance letter
from the transfer-in school is received and the student must continue to attend classes
until the transfer release date) in order to change schools.

➢ I must notify my META international student advisor, at least 21 days in advanced if I

intend to transfer. If classes are in session, the student must attend classes and
otherwise maintain status until the transfer release date. On the transfer release date,
the DSO at the transfer-in school controls the student SEVIS record. The student must
begin classes at the transfer-in school at the next available term or within five months,
whichever is sooner. _________

➢ I understand, I can remain in the U.S. for up to 60 days after I complete my program of
studies, before returning to my home country. If for any circumstances I stop attending
my classes before my I-20 expiration date, and after notifying the student advisor of
such decision, I am aware I must leave the U.S. within 15 days. _________

➢ I understand and I am aware it is my responsibility to make sure I maintain proper

status. ________

IMPORTANT NOTICE: The above information is now accurate but may change over time without
notice. The International Student Advisor will make every attempt to notify you of any such
changes.

“I have read the information above about maintaining my legal status in the United States and
understand I must comply fully with these regulations in order to remain in legal F-1 status.”
