I am Jemal Gabitashvili
Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to be here and speak with you
today. My name is Jemal Gabitashvili but everybody calls me Jaba, study
international relationship at Sulkhan-Saba orbeliani university. I am honored to be
here and share my thoughts about democracy situation in Georgia and as u see on
the screen my topic is Democratic decline in Georgia and its Impact over Georgia's
Political Approximation with the European Union. As title may be sound negative
contest, but unfortunately in this moment the facts confirm it.
Georgia can mention as a young democratic country with his past and historical
adventures, just 32 Years of restoration of Independence after 1918.
Feel to mention that democratic without challenges not exists, same time it is not
award to Hang it on the wall, Needs constant development and maintenance.
Let's move forward and see contents.
Would like make imagine about our Geopolitician situation, and make idea witch
conditions, we have to navigate. I would not go too far back in history, but what
suffered myself, when Russia started a war against Georgia in 2008 and Russia still
controls Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions, which located on central north and
north-west of Georgia, Russian language is widely spoken, even though the
territories are recognized internationally as part of Georgia. It’s 20% of country and
more the 277,400 Internally Displaced Persons. Russia's invasion of Ukraine has been
going on for over a year now. Our neighbors to the south, Armenia and Azerbaijan
conflict witch reactivation during the pandemic period and still going on. Clear in this
condition we need to know who is for us more interesting partner. And at the same
time, the orientation of the country should be firm and unique.
The foundations of democracy are based on human rights, in recent years, really
serious cases against people have been recorded in Georgia, to which there was an
international reaction. minorities in with have a difficult moment of existence, for
example. On 4 June 2 years go Tbilisi Pride announced "Pride Week" to take place
during 1–5 July, consisting of three main events: Public screening of the March for
Dignity, a British documentary film, featuring events around the first Tbilisi Pride, an
open-air Pride Fest and March for Dignity on 5 July as the conclusive event for the
Pride week.
The Tbilisi Pride activists said that during the events they will demand "the
implementation of a human-oriented policy by the government, fulfilment of all
international obligations to ensure the environment free from homophobia and
discrimination, to investigate hate crimes and ensure the safety and freedom of
expression of each citizen of the country.
On the morning of July 5, homophobic groups marched to the parliament. First, they
smashed opposition tents that had been standing in front of the parliament building
for months, and then attacked journalists who were covering the events. this day
real hunt for journalists took place in Tbilisi – radicals attacked 53 media
representatives.
The March of Dignity was cancelled, but the violence on Rustaveli Avenue continued
for several more hours. According to resultants, an insufficient number of police
officers were mobilized on the spot during the day.
The priests urged the audience to violence. “You are obliged to use violence for the
sake of the Motherland”
In this moment real, statements witch we heard first of this event were, refrain from
such originative activates. Most interesting was that they tried to blame opposition
partis. Most unacceptable is language what our politicians us, to ich Uther. They
can’t
calling traditors, slave….
hate speech and physical confrontation in parliament really it makes me lose
motivation to believe there promises.
4 Slide: 12 Eu Recommendation
as our government says this moment is realized 80% and until end of the year, we
will be able to present resultants. Statements what we heard during this period are
that was political and they don’t take responsibility.
5 Slide: Conclusion
Sometime I think and look my parents, when they were my age doing same protest
that we heard, now in street of the Tbilisi. know we see numerous protests in Tbilisi
and Eu flag. this really demonstrate that Georgian people need to have chance to
receive all the benefits that a European family can bring, same time we can do same.
2024 is coming elections, this really challenges for Georgians to be patient to make
real decision, for their country and not for condition that they promise in this
moment.
Make me think they were doing it for us for new generations to live, different
independent country.
Thank you.
