MISSIONARIES IN CENTRAL AND SOUTH AMERICA

 To stop the exploitation of people, missionaries came and preached the Gospel to the Indians.
 Franciscans
 earliest missionaries
 works on Santo Domingo in the Caribbean (1500)
 Mexico (1524)
 Dominicans & Augustinians
 1530- first Bishop in Mexico.
-And soon in Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, and Honduras.
 Jesuits- (1549) arrived in Brazil- colony owned by Portugal
-Soon in Paraguay, Peru, and Mexico.

Numbers of reasons Indians became Christians

 First, some missionaries were good to them.
 Some believes Christian god is stronger than their god because they were conquered by Spaniards.
 These reasons are similar to Goth, Vandals, and Franks.

 Inevitably, as in Asia, "Christian" became equivalent to "Spanish."

 In this very confusing situation the missionaries themselves ran into split loyalties.
 For example, in most places the Christian Indians were not given Communion for many years; they were allowed
only the sacraments of Baptism, Penance, and Matrimony-sacraments that they could understand more easily than
Eucharist.
 No Indians were ordained as priests for almost three hundred years because the king of Spain forbade it.
 As in Asia, the Indians were also victims of abuses-the worst one being slavery.
 Friars were their main defenders.
 Bishop de Las Casas
 Went to Colombia in 1545 and worked for Indian rights.
 In Guatemala, the Spaniards tried to capture him, but he managed to escape.
 Conditions were much the same in Honduras and Panama.
 had many allies among the friars and the Jesuits
 Paraguay(1600s)
 Jesuits set up towns and areas like reservations for Indians.
 Set up schools, weaving projects, and communal farming
 Enemies forced the Jesuits out of South America.
