BSAN 310 In-class Exercise

After viewing the KU Video (in-class, link is also below on page 2), consider the following
questions:

1. Defining the Issue or Problem(s):

Identify what questions or business problems KU is wanting to address...these are what KU
wants to use business analytics for to support their decision making (data-drive decision-
making).
KU wanted to address about the issue around Delta variant and the new school policy regarding
indoor mask policy. They used business analytics (variance, rolling average) to show how many
the number of new COVID diagnoses occur.

At the top/strategic level, KU wants to determine what will the Fall 2021 semester operations
look like. What questions are important here? What issues does KU have?
Looking at the result from business analytics, delta variant is different. It affects more people
than usual COVID virus. So that KU Fall 2021 semester operations should consider indoor mask
policy.

2. What data does KU need? With this, identify sources of the data needed (where will this
data come from).
Even though a student has been vaccinated, the student may be asymptomatic but can spread
the virus. There fore KU need the information about who has been vaccinated and who hasn’t
been vaccinated to get the wide knowledge about current situation about vaccination. This data
can be received by KU medical center through information that the student put on their record.
Moreover, U.S. National Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) can release the
information for the use of school.

3. Identify any data management issues that might arise from the business analytics within the
COVID-19 effort/project (e.g. data management, costs, privacy, security).
Although lots of effort are needed, especially in case of students’ health and school
management. Privacy and security are always the problem. If the leak of information happens,
it may cause students’ privacy issues. Therefore, acknowledging that data management issues
can arise at any time is important so that be aware of that.
