2ND CONDITIONAL (informal)
1. The 2nd Conditional refers to hypothetical actions in the present with an
imaginary result.

IF + SIMPLE PAST , WOULD/WOULN’T + VERB


• If you earned $100,000 a year, what would you do with such amount?

• I would give back a wallet with money if I found it in the street.

• People would be happier if there wasn’t so much traffic in the city.

• If you had one more day of life, would you do what you’re doing now?

2ND CONDITIONAL (informal)
2. The 2nd Conditional is also used to provide advice

IF + I were you , I would/wouldn’t + VERB

• If I were you, I’d do more exercises. (=You should do more exercises)

• If were you, I wouldn’t cheat in the exam. (=You shouln’t cheat in the exam)

2ND CONDITIONAL (informal)
3. Might or could can be used to replace would to refer to probability.

IF + SIMPLE PAST , MIGHT/COULD + VERB


• If I were braver, I might do bungee jumping.

• I could go for a walk if it wasn’t raining.


2ND CONDITIONAL (formal)
A more formal 2nd Conditional is used with were + infinitive in the
dependent clause.

IF + WERE TO + VERB, WOULD + VERB


• If you were to earn $100,000 a year, what would you do with such amount?

• I would phone the police if she were to threaten me.

• If I were to go back to school, I would like it to be different.
