NUCLEIC

ACIDS
NUCLEIC ACIDS
• Are biomolecules composed of its
building blocks nucleotides.
• Nucleotides have three components:
nitrogenous or nitrogen-containing
base; pentose (5-carbon sugar); and
phosphate group
• The nitrogenous base are
derivatives of two parent
compounds – pyrimidine and
purine

PYRIMIDINES PURINES
Cytosine Adenine
Thymine Guanine
2 TYPES OF
NUCLEIC ACIDS
•DNA
•RNA
DNA (DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC
ACIDS)
• DNA molecules can be found in the
nucleus
• It includes 4 nitrogenous bases
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Thymine
DNA (DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC
ACIDS)
• In 1950s, James Watson and Francis Crick
(together with two more scientists)
• They had shown that the DNA molecule
is double stranded and the two strands
wrap around each other forming a coil
or helix.
• It contains deoxyribose sugar
RNA (RIBONUCLEIC
ACIDS)
• RNA is also important in the
production of proteins in organisms.
• It contains the bases
Adenine
Guanine
Cytosine
Uracil
RNA (RIBONUCLEIC
ACIDS)
• RNA is single-stranded molecule.
• RNA has a sugar-phosphate
backbone with nucleotide bases
attached to it.
• It contains ribose sugar
