Concept Notes:
What is proverb?
A proverb is a phrase or saying which contains wisdom, truth, experience,
lessons and advice concerning life and which has been handed down from generation
to generation.”
Proverbs that express a general rule of behavior or conduct are called maxims.
Examples:
1. Your fingers cannot be of the same length.
Useful lesson: We can’t expect things or people to be perfect.
2. Pick up a sesame seed but lose sight of a watermelon.
Useful Lesson: By worrying about the little things, you may miss the big problem
or the big happiness

Literary Devices
1. Imagery– is the use of words that evoke mental pictures that appeal to the senses.
Example: No matter how high a bird flies, it has come down for water.
2. Simile and Metaphor– refer to the use of direct or indirect comparison.
Example: The tongue is like a sharp knife; it kills without drawing blood.
3. Alliteration– is the repetition of initial consonant sounds.
Example: Speak softly, and be slow to begin your speech.
4. Personification– is the attribution of a human quality to an inanimate object.
Example: Pride invites calamity; humility reaps its harvest.
5. Repetition– is the use of a word or phrase more than once in a passage.
Example: Sweet -melon lips, bitter-melon heart.
