INTERACTION OF SOLAR ENERGY WITH THE ATMOSPHERE

A. What’s New?
Almost all of the earth’s energy input comes from the sun but
not all of the sunlight that strikes the top of the atmosphere is
converted into energy at the surface of the earth.

B. What is it?

Solar Energy- is a radiant energy emitted by the sun.

Earth’s Atmosphere is divided into five

layers:

1. Troposphere – is the layer closest to

earth’s surface. The temperature just
above the ground is hotter than the
temperature high above.
2. Stratosphere- is the layer of air that
extends to about 50 km from earth’s
surface. It is in the stratosphere that we
find the ozone layer.
3. Mesosphere- the region of the
earth’s atmosphere above the stratosphere
and below the thermosphere, between 50
km and 80 km altitude.
4. Thermosphere- is between 80 km
and 110 km above the earth. It is
characterized throughout by an increase in
temperature with height.
5. Exosphere- is the upper limit of our
atmosphere. This layer of the atmosphere
merges into space. Satellites are stationed
in this area, 500 km to 1000 km from
Earth.

SEA BREEZE, LAND BREEZE, MONSOONS AND INTERTROPICAL

CONVERGENCE ZONE (ITCZ)

A. What’s New?

Take a walk along a dry beach on a hot early afternoon. No

sooner than putting your barefoot in the sand, you start hopping and
jumping and immediately run towards the sea to soak your scorching
feet in the water. Yes, the sun heats both of them up. However, land
and water do not heat up or cool down at the same pace. This
differential heating and cooling of land and sea give rise to what are
known as breezes in the coastal areas.

B. What is it?
We all have felt the breeze in our surroundings. Breeze is often
referred to as a gentle to moderate wind. These winds are categorized
into two types. Namely- sea breeze and land breeze. Both of these
breezes occur near huge water bodies. Though these both take place
at the same place, there exist a few difference. Let us know what is
sea breeze and land breeze.

Sea Breeze Breeze that blows from the massive water bodies is termed as sea
breeze. This type of breeze normally occurs during the summer and spring season.

Land Breeze – the wind that blows from the land is either called land breeze or an
offshore breeze. This type of breeze normally occurs during the night and early
morning.

Monsoons are wind system. But these winds usually abundant rainfall to the
country and this is probably the reason why they have been mistaken for rains. It
is characterized dry winters and wet summers. Monsoons are similar to land and
sea breezes, but instead of changing between day and night, they change between
summer and winter.

Intertropical Convergence Zone(ITCZ) – is the region that circles the earth, near
the equator and a weather phenomenon formed when trade winds converge in
tropics and rise to form rain clouds. It is characterized by heavy rain fall and for
most of the precipitation. It is a combining with cold air as well as tropical storms.
