Lesson 3 Practice

1. Jane has a box that contains an unknown number of coins (𝑐). Write an expression for the

number of coins she would have if she:

a) Removed 2,

b) Added 10 more,

c) Takes a quarter out,

d) Divided it amongst her three siblings.

2. Shaun think of a number, 𝑏. Write an expression for the answer he gets when he:

a) Multiplies the number by 7 and then subtracts 8 from it,

b) Adds 17 to the number and then divides the answer by 3,

c) Multiplies the number by itself 4 times and then adds 10,

d) First adds 4 to the number and then multiplies the result by 2.

3. Write expressions for each of the following (use 𝑥 as the variable):

a) Multiply a number by 8 and then subtract 2.

b) Multiply a number by 3 and then divide the answer by 4.

c) Subtract the number from 90 and then divide the answer by 7.

d) Divide the number by 5 and then subtract 50.

4. Simplify the following expressions:

a) 7𝑎 + 𝑎 − 3𝑎

b) 3𝑏 − 5𝑏 + 4𝑏

c) 9𝑐 + 5𝑑 − 6𝑐 − 4𝑑

d) 4𝑒 + 8𝑒 + 7𝑒 2 − 9𝑒 2

e) 6𝑓 − 7𝑔 + 𝑓 2 − 6 + 6𝑔 + 4
5. Complete the algebraic pyramid below. Remember the answer in each block is the sum of

the two expressions in the blocks below. One has been done for you.

3𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 2𝑦 − 2𝑥

= 3𝑥 − 2𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 2𝑦

= 𝑥 + 6𝑦

𝒙 + 𝟔𝒚

3𝑥 + 2𝑦 5𝑥 − 2𝑦 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 2𝑦 − 2𝑥
