INTRODUCTION

The theme and topic of this portfolio is Education: The integration of Artificial
Intelligence tools in education. Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools have the potential to
significantly enhance communication studies at the CAPE (Caribbean Advanced
Proficiency Examination) level. One example of this is Personalized Learning. AI-
powered adaptive learning systems can provide personalized learning experiences that
cater to individual student needs. This can help communication studies students at the
CAPE level to focus on their specific strengths and weaknesses, ultimately leading to
better outcomes. This theme/topic can help in my future career, which is to become a
software engineer because AI is becoming increasingly integrated into many software
applications and systems. Software engineers who understand AI concepts and principles
can leverage these technologies to build better software applications. For example,
incorporating AI algorithms into a software application can improve its functionality,
performance, and user experience.
My reason for studying this theme stems from my love of technology. Keeping up
with the latest technological advancements is a regular practice of mine, as I seek to
explore their potential benefits for improving my daily routine. Also, Being a student
who will be taking the CxC CAPE exam, I am interested in learning how technology,
specifically AI, can assist me with my studies.
The theme "The integration of artificial intelligence in education" is evident in the
narrative through the introduction of “AI Teacher", a tool developed by James Clarke's
company to aid students with learning. The story highlights the benefits of AI Teachers in
personalized learning, intelligent tutoring systems, and predictive analytics. In my speech
I mainly focus on these three topics: how is artificial intelligence already being used in
schools to enhance the learning experiences of teachers and students, how can teachers be
trained to effectively utilize AI tools and resources in their classrooms to optimize their
2

teaching methodologies and what are some potential challenge and limitation of using
artificial intelligence in schools, and how can these be mitigated?
In conclusion, the integration of artificial intelligence in education has immense
potential for enhancing personalized learning and improving student outcomes. As a
future software engineer, understanding AI concepts and principles can help me leverage
these technologies to build better software applications. Through exploring the benefits
and challenges of AI in education, we can strive to optimize its use and unlock its full
potential for the betterment of students and teachers alike.

PREFACE

The story of Dunce-Head Academy is one of triumph against all odds. This school,

designed for students who struggle with learning, had long been in need of a solution to

help its students succeed. One dull afternoon the teachers and parents of Dunce-Head

held a meeting on how to improve students' learning, and they were met with an

unexpected proposition that would change the course of their school's history.

The purpose of this narrative is to showcase the impact of technology on learning and

education. The story highlights the introduction of an artificial intelligence system in a

school for students who have difficulty learning. It follows the journey of a particular

class and their teacher as they embrace the AI Teacher and work towards achieving their

academic goals.

The intended audience for this narrative is anyone interested in the use of technology

in education, particularly educators, school administrators, parents and should be read in

PTA meetings and other academic events. It aims to spark a conversation about the

potential of artificial intelligence in helping students learn and improve their academic

performance. The story also highlights the importance of teacher-student relationships

and how technology can be used to strengthen those bonds. Above all, it is a celebration

of the boundless potential of our young people to achieve great things, no matter where

they start from.

One dull afternoon the teachers and parents of Dunce-Head Academy held a meeting on
how to improve students' learning. Dunce-Head Academy is a school for students who
have difficulty learning. The meating had gone on for a long time with parents and
teachers debating among themselves, with neither side yet to find a solution to the
problem. It all came to a pause when a British man, wearing a matching black jacket and
trousers, both made of fine wool appeared seemingly out of nowhere. He impishly asked
to address the audience then proceeded to disburden Mr.Brown, the principal, of both the
microphone and the attention of both parents and teachers.

"Good evening chaps and ladies, the name's James Clarke. I say, I have a jolly
proposition to put forward, if I may." he said with a grin. "Right-o, chaps and ladies. The
thing is, my company and I have gone and developed a nifty artificial intelligence that
can help out students with their learning, you know. Our plan was to sell it off to the
Ministry of Education, but here's the thing: we're willing to give you lot a four-month
free trial, what do you say?"

After dazzling the crowd for nearly an hour the members of the PTA meeting decided to
accept the proposal. After a week of preparation the new artificial intelligence called AI
Teacher was introduced to the students and teachers of Numskull Academy. Out of all the
classes in the school one in particular was in need of the AI Teacher. Class 6 was up to sit
their PEP exam in the next 5 months. Mrs.Green, a short tempered old lady was the class
teacher of the class and wasn’t too pleased sharing her class with the AI Teacher. Early
Monday morning Mrs.Green gathered her students to introduce them to the AI Teacher.

“Good morning student” said Mrs.Green.

“Gud mawnin” the students.mumbled under their breath.
“I SAID GOOD MORNING STUDENTS!!” shouted Mrs.Green demanding
“Good morning Mrs.Green!!” replied the students this time more energetic.
5

“SO!” uttered Mrs.Green with a stern voice “can anyone tell me what an artificial
intelligence is”
“I know,” answered timmy. “It's a robot”
“No, it can’t be,” replied Jake skeptically.
“Then what is it?” ask Timmy curiously.
“It’s a computer robot,” muttered Suzzie.

Excited by their classmates' answers, the students pleaded with Mrs.Green to tell them
what an artificial intelligence is. But she couldn’t answer because she was surprised by
how interested the students were about learning. “Never has the student been this
interested in participating in class, why is that” she wondered to herself. She began
explaining what an AI was and how it will help them on their PEP eXam.

AI Teacher helped the students learn in various ways such as: Personalized learning. AI
Teacher analyzed the students data and adapted their learning experience to their
individual needs and preference. AI Teacher also has an intelligent tutoring system that
provides real time feedback and support for students as they work through problems and
assignments. It also uses predictive analytics. This is when the AI Teacher analyzes
students' data and predicts which students may be at risk of falling behind, allowing
Mrs.Green to intervene early and provide additional support.

After 4 successful months and one month left until PEP, the free trial expired and AI
Teacher was withdrawn from the school. This left the teachers and students in a state of
turmoil. This caused the school to open a petition to get the Ministry of Education to fund
the use of an AI Teacher at the Numskull Academy. Unmotivated by the lack of
performance by the school over the years, the MOE unwillingly decided to fund the AI
Teacher under the condition the school do exceptionally well on the PEP exam to
demonstrate the effectiveness of the AI. For the next month up until the exam day
Mrs.Green relentlessly studied and practiced every thing they learned from the AI
6

Teacher. Having had the assistance of the AI Teacher Mrs.Green and her student became
closer as she was less stressed by all the work she had to do. Their closeness allowed
them to work together, using the skills they learned from an AI Teacher.

The morning of the exam Mrs.Green wished her students well as they entered the exam
room.
“mi hand dem a sweat,” said Suzzie.
“An' mi heart ah beat hard,” Timmy added with a squeaky voice.
“Talk properly” said Mrs.Green before reassuring them everything would be ok.
A week pass of exams after exams and then as if in a flash it was three months later and
the students are awaiting their results. Mr.Brown the principal, stood on a podium above
the students with neither a smile nor frown. Then suddenly as the students and teachers'
stomachs were about to burst with anticipation, he let out a magnificent smile and right
then and there they knew they had succeeded.

. LANGUAGE ANALYSIS

The narrative “The AI Teacher” examine the student-teacher and parent-teacher

relationship and how it can be improved with technology. The communication between
the teacher and the students in the passage is characterized by a range of emotions and
behaviors, from excitement and curiosity to frustration and sternness. To properly
analyze this story we will be looking at the attitude to language and dialectal variation
used in this narrative. Over the last century technology has drastically changed how we
communicate with each other. This story hopes to document the future changes AI will
make to education once it is introduced.
7

The passage exhibits dialectal variation, particularly in the use of acrolect, mesolect,
and basilect forms. The first speaker, James Clarke, uses acrolect forms characterized by
the use of "jolly" and "chaps" and "right-o." These are forms typically associated with
upper-class English, and they suggest a formal, polite register. On the other hand, the
dialogue between Mrs. Green and her students exhibits mesolect and basilect forms,
which are forms associated with a more informal or colloquial register. For instance, the
students respond with "gud mawnin" instead of "good morning" and "mi" instead of
"my." These are examples of mesolect forms that may be typical of less formal settings.
Again, the use of mesolect forms is seen in the students' responses, which include "mi
hand dem a sweat" and "an' mi heart ah beat hard." These are examples of mesolectal
forms that may be typical of more informal settings and suggest a lower-class or
nonstandard register.Overall, the passage displays a range of dialectal variations that
reflect the characters' social backgrounds and contexts. These variations contribute to the
realism and authenticity of the characters and the setting.
Mrs. Green displayed a negative attitude towards the language being spoken by the
students in the classroom by demanding that they speak properly. When the students
responded with "Gud mawnin," she shouted, "I SAID GOOD MORNING
STUDENTS!!" and demanded that they repeat themselves in a more energetic manner.
Later on, when Suzzie and Timmy spoke in dialect, saying "mi hand dem a sweat" and
"An' mi heart ah beat hard," respectively, Mrs. Green told them to "talk properly." This
suggests that she views their dialect as inferior to Standard English and believes that they
should conform to the norms of Standard English in the classroom.
In conclusion, "The AI Teacher" explores the potential for technology to improve the
relationship between teachers and students. The use of dialectal variation in the dialogue
adds to the authenticity of the characters and setting. However, Mrs. Green's negative
attitude towards nonstandard dialects suggests a preference for Standard English in the
classroom.
