L4: FROM ADAPTING TO DEVELOPING MATERIALS

In this opportunity, your assignment will be to choose one of the three reading activities
provided (1. What's up 1/ 2. English File Elementary/ 3. Activate B2), or you can choose one
of your preference from a book you've worked with, (if so, include Book Title, page, and
level). Adapt the reading activity to suit a specific group of students of yours, using one of
the techniques suggested by Islam and Mares in Chapter 5. Also, try to include a brief
description of the group of the students (level, age, context, etc.)

1. What’s up
A class of 23 students in a secondary public school. The students are 12 to 14 years old, and
there are 11 boys and 12 girls in the class.
The students have all had between one and two years of English instruction at elementary
school. The students currently spend three hours a week in English class. This group of
students needs more exposure to a wide and rich range of language input in a variety of
contexts. They also needs to practice their oral skills.

REORDERING: The teacher asks students wheter they like or not going shopping. In this case
teacher personalizes the topic.
After reading the material, ADDING - EXTENDING by adding more sentences with present
simple.
Finally ADDING - EXPANDING by including aTPR activity to make certain language items
more comprehensible.
