Duties and Responsibilities

 Admits patients in the unit. Identifies patient correctly.


 Introduces self and gives orientation to patients in the ward e.g. call bell, bathroom, etc.
 Facilitates safe transfer of patient in other departments or to another hospital.
 Conducts initial assessment of patient and reassessment after 12 hours.
 Monitors patient’s Vital Signs – Blood Pressure, Heart/Pulse Rate, Respiratory Rate, Temperature,
Oxygen Saturation and records it in the Vital Signs Monitoring Sheet.
 Asses and manage Pain Score using Pain Score Tool.
 Checks Random Blood Sugar (RBS) of Diabetic patients receiving antihyperglycemic medications, or
when necessary.
 Administer Blood and Blood products and observes patient for any untoward blood transfusion
reaction.
 Performs insertion of IV cannula using aseptic technique and monitors th IV site and its patency.
 Inserts Nasogastric Tube (NGT) feeding per physicians order.
 Collects blood specimen, stool, urine samples and sends it to laboratory for investigation.
 Assist with the physician’s rounds and carries out each doctor’s order.
 Utilizes the Nursing Care Plan every shift and evaluates patient’s improvement after quality nursing
care.
 Renders continuous quality nursing care to patients with Sickle Cell Anemia, Diabetes Mellitus,
Hypertension, Cerebro-Vascular Accident, etc.
 Takes care of surgical patients with fracture, Road Traffic Accident (RTA), and Trauma from fall, etc.
 Prepares patients preoperatively like insertion of Foley’s Catheter, obtaining informed consent, and
keeping patient on NPO at least 8 hours prior to the scheduled operation.
 Nursing care of post operative patients, regularly monitors any discharges from the dressings and
informs the surgeon for any pertinent findings.
 Observes Infection Control Policies such as Hand Hygiene.
 Assists the physician in performing special procedures i.e. Lumbar Puncture, Bone Marrow Aspiration,
Paracenthesis, Fine Needle Aspiration and Biopsy, etc.
 Prepares and administers (orally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly,
 intravenously) and record prescribed medications. Report adverse reaction to medications or treatment
in accordance with the policy regarding the administration of medication by a license registered nurse.
 Provides Nursing care and express sympathy to frail dying patients.
 Participates in CQIPS System Improvement activities, System Control and activities and Staff
Development activities.
 Participates in environment safety awareness i.e. Disaster and Fire Drills.
 Activates Emergency Codes including Code Blue and participates in CPR.
 Monitors the Key Process Indicators (KPI) related to the unit on a regular basis.
