How to install your Inflatable Shelter

1. Applicability

This A320 Engine Change Shelter is one of a series of custom designed and patented inflatable
shelters that are manufactured by J.B. Roche (MFG) Ltd, Cork, Ireland.
This quickly installed unit is intended to protect maintenance crews from the worst of the
elements when working on the engine of the Airbus A320.
It may be inflated around the engine to undertake maintenance work.
This unit is designed to work on one engine only, so you may require more than one Shelter if you
are intending to work on both engines at once.

2. Observations

This set of installation instructions explains how to install your engine change shelter. Please
ensure that you read these instructions from beginning to end before you install this unit.
Prior to using this shelter for a maintenance task, we highly recommend that your personnel
familiarise themselves with the shelter kit from the identification of each part, setup and
installation, handling and control to deflation and packing processes. It is important that your
team have learned to use this Shelter in calm conditions initially. Once your team have been
through this process with the assistance of these installation instructions, they should then be
equipped to deploy it for a maintenance task.
If you would like to receive any additional assistance or clarification in relation to the use of this
shelter, please send your comments or questions to: techinfo@jbroche.com. We will respond to
your query as soon as possible.
Please note that in addition to the Inflatable Shelter itself (which is supplied as one piece and
folded into a bag), you will also be in receipt of an electric blower and a pair of extension rods.
You will require these to inflate the Shelter.
In addition to the Shelter Kit (Blower, Extension Rods, Repair Kit and these instructions) you
should plan to have some or all of the following equipment available:
A power outlet or generator, an extension cord, an ECU or Ramp Heater, Water Barrels or sand
bags and Work Lights on stands for night shifts.

3. Precautions

Please note that it is not possible to use your Inflatable Shelter in all weather conditions, as these
Shelters have the potential to become unstable in high winds. We do not recommend that they
are used in winds exceeding 25knots. It is important to be observant of the weather conditions at
all times, in order to determine the safe use of the shelter. Should the weather conditions
deteriorate, you need to be prepared to deflate the shelter at short notice.
It is recommended that 1 person is appointed to monitor the working conditions which may
impact the safe use of the shelter. Any instances of power loss, or rapidly changing weather
conditions must be prepared for and acted on.
These Shelters are heavy, therefore it is highly recommended that the personnel handling this
shelter would have received prior training in the area of manual handling. Should the unit need to
be lifted, use mechanical handling equipment.
The Electric Blower supplied with this Shelter is designed for outdoor continuous use. However,
you must ensure that it is not allowed to sit in a pool of water at any time.
If an extension cord or reel is being used, ensure that this is fully unwound before use and that it is
led in such a way that it does not pose a trip hazard.
If the supplied groundsheet is being used for the inflation of the Shelter, make sure to remove it
when the Shelter has been inflated, as it may create a tripping hazard. The groundsheet should be
used only to help keep the shelter clean during the inflation and deflation process and while
positioning the shelter. The groundsheet should not be used while working inside the shelter.
The Shelter may be cleaned if required – any loose dirt or mud should be brushed off the Shelter
using a nylon-bristle brush of medium stiffness. Do not use detergents under any circumstances as
these may affect the porosity of the framework of the Shelter.
To eliminate the risk of wind causing the Shelter to move around, ALWAYS anchor the shelter
prior to inflation and fit the Red Safety strap.
When the Shelter has been inflated, it MUST be ballasted.
Perform a tool and foreign object check inside and around the shelter prior to deflating and
packing.
Make sure that the Shelter is completely dry prior to rolling it up into the storage bag. On
occasions, it may be necessary to re-bag your Shelter when it is still damp or wet. It is not a
problem to leave your Shelter in this condition for a couple of days. However, it is very important
that the unit is fully dry before moving it into the storage for a longer period.

8. Maintenance Information:

This unit will provide many years of trouble-free operation if you follow some very simple
maintenance procedures as follows:
The Electric Blower supplied with your Shelter is maintenance free but always double check that
the Voltage and Frequency being supplied by the generator or ground power source matches
that of the manufacturers plate on the Blower.
If you are using an extension cord between the generator and Blower, make sure to uncoil it
completely before use.
Your Shelter is also largely maintenance-free, although the unit may become soiled over time.
This soiling can be kept to an absolute minimum if you ensure that the Shelter is unrolled on the
ground sheet provided.
Again, when it comes to deflating the unit any spillages should be mopped up and dried off
before rolling up and re-bagging the unit.
The Shelter may be cleaned if required – any loose dirt or mud should be brushed off the shelter
using a nylon-bristle brush of medium stiffness.
Do not use detergents under any circumstances as these may affect the porosity of the
framework of the Shelter.
During aircraft recovery, it may be necessary to re-bag your Shelter when it is still damp or wet.
As our fabrics incorporate mildew inhibitors, it is not a problem to leave your Shelter in this
condition for a couple of days, but it is important that the unit be unrolled and allowed to dry
fully at the earliest available opportunity.
In case you need to repair your Shelter, you will find a repair kit located in the end panel of the
Shelter Storage bag – if it is necessary to undertake an on-site repair, please follow the simple
instructions in Section 9.
In the event that extensive repairs are required, the unit may be returned to us. Alternatively,
these repairs should be within the scope of most companies skilled in the operation of industrial
sewing machines.

9. Repair instructions:
Included in the repair kit, there are the necessary materials to repair the shelter should the need arise. If a tear
in the fabric occurs, it must be sewn and sealed with an adhesive strip or just sewn closed. The adhesive
patches supplied in the repair kit only work on certain types of material. In order to identify if the adhesive
patch can be used on the required material, contact: techinfo@jbroche.com.

Using the needle and thread sew the tear shut. Make a zig-zag stitch, cut and knot the thread ends.

Use the sewing palm for tougher materials. If applicable, use the adhesive patch to close.

Ensure to use adhesive patch on both sides.
