e-DXC Ethernet Card

1. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
The Ethernet Interface Card is a software configurable plug-in card for the e-DXC device.

There are two types of Ethernet cards. One is equipped with an L2 switch and one is equipped without an
L2 switch. Both cards have 8 FE Ports and 1 GbE Port. The cards are pictured below.

2. INSTALLATION

2.1. Mechanical Installation

The Ethernet interface card will plug into any tributary slot in the e-DXC chassis. The card is hot-pluggable
(ie. it can be plugged in while the e-DXC device is powered up).

2.2. Electrical Installation

All electrical connections are on the backplane. The electrical connections are made when the card is firmly
seated into a tributary slot in the e-DXC chassis.

2.3. Configuration Setting

All configurations can be set with keyboard commands via a VT-100 monitor. Please refer to

CHAPTER 4. ETHERNET CARD (Without L2 Switch) SETUP PROCEDURE

and

CHAPTER 5. ETHERNET CARD (With L2 Switch) SETUP PROCEDURE.

Alstom Page 4

3. OPERATION
The Ethernet card has multi-color LEDs for operation and error indications. The indication is either off, steady
on, or flickering (flashing). The following table lists each LED and its color and the meaning it represents.

Table 3-1 LED Indication for Ethernet Cards

LED Indication for Ethernet Card

LED Color Indication
ACTIVE Off Card failure
Flashing Green Working card
Flashing Amber Standby card
Flashing Red Card is unregistered
TEST Off Card self-test is okay
Flashing Red Card self-test failed.
ALM This LED is used to indicate alarm status AU-LOP, AU-AIS, TU-LOP, TU-
AIS, UNEQ, RDI, REI, BIP..., all paired alarms about SDH/SONET. It is also
used to indicate the port link status.
Red Critical alarm message or Major alarm message occurs
Amber Minor alarm message occurs
Green Informative alarm message or no alarm message occurs

4.1. Menu Tree

This chapter provides detailed setup instructions for the Ethernet interface card without an L2 switch

Please note that Tributary cards must be registered with the e-DXC device or you will not be able to access
their detailed menu screens.

4.5.9. Link Failure Propagation

Note: Local LAN Port failure is reflected upstream at the WAN Port. The Ethernet port of each device is
monitored. If a link failure is detected at either device a signal will automatically be sent to the other device
to shut down the corresponding Ethernet port. Thus, the shut down of an Ethernet port is propagated.

Similarly, if WAN (VCG) port failure occurs, link failure propagation will shut down the corresponding LAN
ports. Link Failure Propagation is for E-line mode only.

6. Application: ELAN Ring

6.1. Introduction

This chapter introduces a common application for this card, which is setting up a ring topology using Ethernet
links. ELAN, or short for Ethernet Local Area Network, is the name we will use for this application.

NOTE: This application is only for the Ethernet card with the L2 Switch. Only FE (fast Ethernet) of 10/100
speeds are supported.

with L2 Switch

10/100
Ethernet e-DXC

Although physically connected as a ring, logically it is viewed as a tree or a linear topology. This allows it to
maintain the simple broadcast functionality common to LAN networks without incurring loops. To maintain
this functionality, MSTP (multiple spanning tree protocol) is used.
