Red Shallot and Garlic

Once upon a time, in a beautiful village, there lived a father and daughter. The girl's name is Bawang
Putih (Garlic). She not only has a beautiful face, but also a very good heart and attitude.

Bawang Putih's (Garlic’s) life began to change when her father decided to marry a woman who
already had a child named Bawang Merah (Red Shallot). As if in contrast to Bawang Putih (Garlic),
Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) was a girl who was impolite, easily angered, and was always mean to
Bawang Putih (Garlic). So did the stepmother. She was always favoritism and loved Bawang Merah
(Red Shallot) more.

Even so, Bawang Putih (Garlic) never hated her mother and stepsister. She was always kind and
obeyed their orders.

One day, Bawang Putih (Garlic) faced a big problem because she washed away one of her
stepmother's clothes while washing clothes by the river. Bawang Putih (Garlic) walked along each
side of the river to find the whereabouts of her stepmother's clothes.

Bawang Putih (Garlic) was afraid that if she didn't find her stepmother’s clothes, her stepmother
would be very angry. The search ended when Bawang Putih (Garlic) found an old woman who
managed to save the shirt from drifting away with the river current. However, the old woman gave
Bawang Putih (Garlic) a condition to help with her work.

With pleasure, Bawang Putih (Garlic) helped all the old woman's work. Bawang Putih (Garlic) was
grateful because the old woman had saved her stepmother's clothes. Before going home, Bawang
Putih (Garlic) was offered a pumpkin by the old woman. Bawang Putih (Garlic) was required to
choose between a large pumpkin and a small pumpkin. No need to think long, Bawang Putih (Garlic)
chose a small pumpkin.

Arriving at home, how surprised Bawang Putih (Garlic) was when she cut open the pumpkin that the
old woman had given her. As it turned out, the little pumpkin contained gold and sparkling jewels.
The stepmother and Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) were surprised to see Bawang Putih (Garlic) was
able to find a pumpkin filled with gold and jewelry. They told Bawang Putih (Garlic) to tell how she
got the magic pumpkin.

The next day, Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) did exactly the same thing as Bawang Putih’s (Garlic’s)
story. However, when the old woman offered a pumpkin, Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) chose a large
pumpkin.

On the way home, Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) was very happy. She imagined that the large
pumpkin contained far more gold and jewelery than Bawang Putih's (Garlic’s).

The stepmother welcomed Bawang Merah (Red Shallot) as happy as she had arrived at the house.
They were both very excited to split the pumpkin. However, then the unexpected happened. Instead
of containing more gold and jewelry, the large pumpkin chosen by Bawang Merah (Red Shallot)
contained venomous snakes.

Stepmother and Bawang Merah (Shallot) screamed in fear. Bawang Putih (Garlic) immediately helped
them drive away the venomous snakes. After the venomous snakes left their house, Bawang Putih
(Garlic) sincerely gave the gold and jewelery she found in the small pumpkins.
For the kindness of Bawang Putih and the bad things that happened to them, the stepmother and
Bawang Merah apologized to Bawang Putih. Both of them finally realized their mistake and promised
not to be mean to Bawang Putih again.
