Exercise 4
Presenter: Welcome back to This is Your Life. On tonight’s show we’re looking back
on the career of James Watson, one of Britain’s most well-loved chat show hosts.
James, before the break you were talking about your wife, Anna. How did you two
meet?
James: Well, I first met Anna 40 years ago. She was on holiday in London but broke
her arm in a cycling accident. That meant she missed her flight back to Paris and had
to stay a day in hospital. That day, I was also in hospital after I broke my nose playing
rugby. I got chatting to her and, after we both got out of hospital, I showed her around
London. The rest is history!
Presenter: Like you said, that was 40 years ago and this year you celebrated your
35th wedding anniversary. What makes the relationship work so well?
James: Well, Anna is an incredible woman to be around. She’s one of the most
intelligent people I know, yet she is so modest about her abilities. And she’s very
optimistic. Even in the most difficult times, she still sees the bright side of things. To
this day, I like nothing more than talking to her in the evenings over a cup of tea!
Presenter: And do you two share any hobbies?
James: Well, any chance we get we like watching old movies at home. I don’t watch
much TV, and we can’t really go to the cinema because I’m often recognised, so
instead we rent DVDs, mostly of black and white classics. And we love walking, too.
Not hiking through mountains or anything demanding like that; just nice relaxing walks
in the forest.
Presenter: I see. And it was in 1980 when your daughter, Laura, was born. In what
way did that change your lives?
James: Well, that was my first year in television so I was very busy. I really wanted to
spend more time at home, so it was very frustrating. At least Anna was understanding
about the situation. She resigned from her job and has been a full-time mother ever
since. Looking back, we’re glad we made that decision. We’re so proud of Laura. She’s
recently completed her degree from St Martin’s College of Art and, no, she hasn’t
decided to follow in the footsteps of her father! Instead, she hopes to work as a fashion
designer. She’s very confident and energetic, so who knows what the future holds?
Presenter: Well, we know how much your wife and daughter mean to you, James. So,
we’ve invited them to the show! Ladies and gentlemen, Anna and Laura Watson!
James: Oh, what a surprise!
