GIRLS ON THE RUN PROGRAM

Elementary school girls in the United States are celebrating strength, health, and
confidence while participating in the 10-week Girls on the Run program at their
schools.
The Girls on the Run nonprofit running club was established in Charlotte, North
Carolina by Molly Barker. It is about more than just running. It’s about positive self-
image and inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident.
Molly started running at 15 when she found herself stuck in the “girl box,” where
many girls go as they begin to change into who they think they should be instead of
who they really are.
Molly founded Girls on the Run in 1996 with 13 girls. The next year, 26 girls joined,
and then 75, and so on. Today, there are 225 programs in 150 cities across North
America.
Girls on the Run provides girls, aged 9 to 11, with tools to embrace their strengths
and navigate life. During a fall or spring session, the girls meet after school twice a
week. After eating a healthy snack, they have a lesson that encourages positive
emotional, social, and mental health. The topics are things like bullying, friendship,
and gossip. After that, they go outside to run around the track.
