Choose a special place for family reading, like a comfortable chair or pillows piled on the floor. Let your child select the book for you to read aloud. Hold the book in such a way so that he or she can see the pictures. If possible, also let her or him turn the pages. Take time to look at and talk about the pictures. Don't just read out the story rather talk about it. Let your child point out letters, shapes, colours and animals. Understand that reading begins at home. Children read their environment, so make your home a print rich environment, Read! Don't expect reading to be of much importance pertaining to shopping to your children if they see that it’s not important to you Invite your child to read out a story to you. If he or she is a pre reader, he'll often interpret his own story using illustrations and his imaginations. Make few lists such as those for cloths, buying of books and things to be taken on a trip. Read aloud to your child everyday. Preschool Story Time Before reading out a story to your child, let him or her “read” the pictures to you. Then, you read the story and find out how close your child's story was to the actual story. Counting Things Practice counting as you put away or chop vegetables and fruits. PPIPPPPP Examples: Ask, "How many carrots did I buy? How many bars of soap were there in the shop? How many cans of soup were there in the shelf? How many boxes of cereal were there in the carton?" A a x Gro SE ORAL 4. Counting Beans and Seeds In a bowl, place ten beans (large rajma beans or tamarind seeds, for example). Ask the child to take out two at time and put them on the table or handover them to you. Similarly, ask the child for all numbers up to 10 in random and straight order counting both forward from (1 to 10) as well as backward (from 10 to 1). When mastered, ask them to place a few beans on your one hand and few beans on your other hand. Then ask them to tell which hand has more. Repeat till the concept of larger and smaller numbers is clear. You may extend this exercise to 20 and so forth. 5. Drawing Together For this art activity, you'll need crayons or markers and few drawing sheets. Both parent and preschooler draw pictures together. Take turns telling about your pictures, Then ask your child to name the colours that he or she has used. Afterwards take a "Colour Walk" with your child, Ask him or her to point out all the things that are having the same colour (choose a colour). 6. Show Them The Night Sky Take your child outside for a walk during night when there is a clear sky and show them the constellations made by the stars. Children will start appreciating beauty and wonder of the universe. ANYTIME ACTIVITIES FOR PARENTS AND PRESCHOOLERS 7. I Love You Tell your child four things that you love about him/her.
