Objective: Guidelines for cutting rig-up length cable, making new rope
socket and changing weak point
Scope: Local Procedure – Wireline and Perforating Services PSL

To all Field Professionals and Service Supervisors:

There are several cases, where field people does not have a reference, for when and how long to cut
the wire-line cables before making a rope socket or after running low weight tool (like TMDL) with 7C
conductor cable, and also when and how often we have to change 9000lbs weak point on HRCH.

We will follow this guide lines for now, and will keep updating the guidelines based on the experience
we will have in the future:

1. Every-time after finish TMDL job (or equivalent low weight tools) ran with 7C cable; need to cut
200’ of OH cable (from rope socket end) and re-head before doing next open-hole jobs.
2. Need to do re-head for OH rope socket and cut 10’ of cable (or longer if necessary) from rope
socket end:
a. after 10 consecutive OH runs, or
b. after 3 OH runs with max tension (15340 lbs) applied to the cable, or
c. After inspection on the rope socket and found there is something wrong (bad condition)
with the rope socket (even if it less than 10 runs). There are many cases where it does
not need to make a complete new rope socket, but only need to change Teflon sleeve,
boots, or new socket.
3. When wireline cable returned to SKL for maintenance/recondition, spooling team will check if
the rig up length of cable, will need to be cut or not (need approval from FSC).
4. Any plan to cut wireline cable more than 50ft need approval from FSC
5. Need to change weak point:
a. after each job where weak point is pulled to 2/3 of its weak point (after pulling 6000 lbs
at down hole tension for the 9000lbs weak point), or

b. After inspection on the weak point and found there is something wrong (bad condition)
with the weak point (crack, deform, etc).

Before make a rope socket Ensure the cable past continuity and Insulation checked, as per
OEB-2007/052 and WM-THA-HAL-LP-422 HRCH Operation and Maintenance.

Step 1
Wrap the cable with electrical tape about 9 to 10 inches from the end of the cable.

Step 2
• Take the end of the cable and place it between two halves of the cable clamp and secure in a
vise. Make sure the two halves of the cable clamp are flush with each .Install wire spreader on
top off cable clamp.

Step 3
Install taper cup (SAP 100007610) on the end of the cable.

Step 4
Unravel each strand of the outer armor to put on the wire spreader. This allows the outer armor to be
wedged between the outer cone and the taper cup. Outer armor is wrapped in a clockwise direction;
therefore the strands of outer armor should be unraveled in a counter clockwise direction. When
unraveling the outer armor, keep dirt and debris from filling the taper cup.

Step 5
Place the outer cone (SAP 100000856) over the cable and wedge it between the unraveled outer
armor and the inner armor.

With the outer cone wedged in place, take the insertion tool (SAP 100000858) and place it over the
cable. Make sure the outer strands of armor are evenly spaced and do not overlap or cross between
the outer cone and the taper cup.

Use vice grip to support hand and hammer to seat the outer cone firmly into the taper cup. Please be
careful with pinch/hit point while hammering the insertion tool with hammer.

VICE-GRIP IS MANDATORY TO BE USED DURING THIS PROCESS (SEE PICTURE ABOVE).

The depth the outer cone seats in the taper cup depends on the diameter of the outer armor.

CAUTION: Make sure the insertion tool is in place against the outer cone before hammering in
the tool. Damage will result to the outer cone and the insertion tool if they are not correctly
engaged.

Step 6
Leave the insertion tool in place and use a hacksaw to heavily score the outer armor strands flush
with the taper cup. Remove the insertion tool and bend the strands of armor to break them off.

Step 7
Unravel each strand of the inner armor. The inner cone (SAP 101237583) wedges between the inner
armor and the center conductor bundle. The inner armor in wrapped in a counter clockwise direction;
therefore the strands of inner armor should be unraveled in a clockwise direction. Make sure that no
dirt of debris fills the taper cup as the inner armor is unraveled.

Step 8
With the inner armor unraveled, slide the inner cone over the conductor bundle and wedge it between
the strands of the inner armor and conductor bundle. Take the insertion tool (SAP 101237583) and
place over the cable. Make sure the inner strands of armor are evenly spaced and do not overlap or
cross between the inner cone and outer cone. Use a hammer to seat the inner cone firmly into the

outer cone. The height of the inner cone varies depending on the wear of the armor package.
Generally the inner cone extends above the taper cup about 1/4 to 3/8 inch when properly seat.
CAUTION: Driving the inner cone too deep will cut the conductor insulation.

Step 9:
Leave the insertion tool in place and use a hacksaw to heavily score the strands of inner armor flush
with the taper cup. Then bend the strands of armor to break them off after that use hand grinding to
reduce the contrast of the wire.

Step 10
Clean carefully all the metal debris from around the taper cup/inner-out cone after cutting the inner

Step 12
After removing the jacket material, clean all the debris around the conductors by using CRC first and
after that WD-40.

Step 13
Measure the conductor wires and trim them to a length of 7 inches above the taper cup.

Step 14
Lubricate the wire with Silicon Grease Dow Corning DC111 (SAP 100000511) and slide the conductor
boot (SAP 100000802) over the wire. Then take a Teflon sleeve (SAP 100000649) and slide it over
the end of the wire. Install a conductor boot and Teflon sleeve on each of the remaining conductor
wires.

CAUTION: Do not put the conductor wires at a perpendicular angle to the taper cup. This can
result in damage to the conductor insulation causing possible electrical leakage.

Step 15
Use the wire strippers and strip approximately 1/4 inch of insulation off the end of the conductor wires.
Take care not to cut the wire as it could result in electrical leakage of the cable or other malfunctions.

Step 16
Put a K-20 socket connector (SAP 100000799) in the crimping tool (SAP 100115314) and crimp the
socket connector on the end of the conductor wire. Repeat for each of the remaining conductor wires
after that used Contact Cleaner to clean wire and WD-40.
Note: Set the crimping tool size to 14 before crimping any K-20 socket connector.
Slide the rubber conductor boot and Teflon sleeve up over the end of the socket connector on each of
the conductor wires.

Step 17
Use a screwdriver or long nose pliers, depends on ground wire connector type, to install a ground
wire into the taper cup.
Note: Ground wire should be inspected for both electrical and mechanical integrity.
