Naskah Rengasdengklok

On August 15, 1945, at the Bacteriology Laboratory (Central Jakarta) a meeting of several youths and
students was held. The leaders of the meeting were Sukarni and Chaerul Saleh.

SCENE 1

Sukarni : "Have you heard the latest news?"

The youths : "Not yet. What's that, man?"

Sukarni : "Just now, Sutan Syahrir and I heard the news from BBC London radio in Bandung who
informed Japan of surrendering to the Allies.”

Chairul Shaleh : "That means, we are all full of strength."

Sukarni : “That's right. Thus, I gather all of you here to discuss the situation this time. We take
advantage of this situation to quickly arrange independence.”

Dervish : "Therefore, let's agree to reject all forms of 'gifts' of independence from Japan because
we will arrange our own independence."

Wikana : "Darwis is right, Independence is a right and a matter of the people which must be
proclaimed immediately. Let's all ask Ir. Sukarno and Bung Hatta to sever all relations with Japan."

Sutan Syahrir : "Okay, If you all agree, how about Wikana and Derwis meet the two figures to discuss
further and convey our decision. How about a meeting this afternoon, we'll just close it here. You all can
return to your respective residences and wait for Soekarno and Bung Hatta to speak up."

Wikana : "All right then, bro. See you tomorrow morning. Let's go first. Thank you for the
information." (shakes hands with Sukarni and Chairul Shaleh)

Youths : (Shake hands one by one with Sukarni and Chairul Shaleh)

Wikana : "Assalamu'alaikum"

Sukarni : "Wa'alaikumsalam"

SCENE 2:
Wikana and Darwis arrived at Soekarno's residence at Jalan Pegangsaan Timur No. 56. Jakarta, around
21.00. WIB. Both conveyed the results of the meeting's decisions. At the meeting, several nationalist
figures such as Moh. Hatta, Iwa Kusumumasumantri, Samsi, Buntaran, Suidro and Ahmad Subardjo.

Wikana : "Assalamu'alaikum"

Ir. Soekarno : "Wa'alaikumsalam. What's wrong with you here? Come on in."

Wikana & Dervish: (sit down)

Dervish : “Look, dude. Earlier, Brothers Chairul Shaleh and Sukarni heard the news that Japan
had surrendered to the Allies on BBC Radio London in Bandung. So from that this afternoon we, the
youth group, gathered to hold a meeting and the result was, all the youth agreed that Bung Soekarno
and Bung Hatta immediately drafted Indonesian independence."

Moh. Hatta : "What Dervish said is true. However, this should be planned and decided by PPKI first."

Wikana : "But it would be best if Bung Hatta and Bung Soekarno cut any ties related to Japan.
Because, independence is our right, man. Not Japanese right. Therefore, we are here urgently that the
proclamation of independence be declared immediately tomorrow, on August 16, 1945."

Ir. Soekarno : "All right, all right. Meanwhile, Darwis and Wikana returned to their respective
residences. I will negotiate it again with the others.”

Dervish : "Okay, thank you. We go first, Assalamu'alaikum"

Ir. Soekarno : "Wa'alaikumsalam."

Hatta left Jakarta with the aim of keeping them away from Japanese influence? How?"

Jusuf Kunto : "Where are we going to alienate them, bro?"

Cudanco Singgih : "What if Rengasdengklok, a city in Kawedanan in Karawang? Because this place is
PETA's headquarters under cudanco Subeno, and it is located under the command of PETA Purwakarta
which has a close relationship with PETA Daidan in Jakarta.”

The young people also agreed with Singgih's cudanco idea. Exactly at 04.00 WIB, Ir. Soekarno and Moh.
Hatta was taken by a group of youths to Rengasdengklok. This group departed from Sukarno's residence
escorted by PETA troops under the leadership of cudanco Singgih.

BRAK! (Door is broken)

Chaerul Shaleh : (Silences Soekarno's mouth, drags him by force and then takes him to the ship)

Sukarni : (Silences Mr. Hatta's mouth, drags him by force and takes him to the ship)

The delegation of Ir. Soekarno and Moh. Hatta arrived at Rengasdengklok safely on the morning of 16
August 1945. Soekarno-Hatta spent a full day at Rengasdengklok.

Sukarni : "Well, beforehand, I'm sorry we brought all of you by force here. We cannot wait any longer
for Indonesian independence. So please reconsider.”

Soekarno : "Please be patient, Bung Sukarni. We know the younger factions are impatient, but
everything takes time.”

Moh. Hatta : “That's right. We will try everything and soon you don't have to worry about everything."

Youth efforts to pressure Ir. Soekarno and Moh. Hatta did not succeed. Because of their authority and
charisma, the youths felt reluctant to put pressure on them.

SCENE 3

Finally Ir. Sukarno held talks with cudanco Singgih regarding the immediate implementation of the
proclamation.

C. Singgih: "I want you to immediately declare our independence. Japan has surrendered Dude, this is
the right time for us to declare Indonesia's independence.

Soekarno : "Look, I will immediately make the proclamation of independence of the Republic of
Indonesia as soon as I return to Jakarta. I promise."

C. Singgih : "Okay, I will quickly return to Jakarta and convey the plan for the proclamation to colleagues
and leaders in. In advance, thank you very much, Brother Soekarno."

In Jakarta...

Ahmad Subardjo: "How about it, brother Wikana? Do you agree that the proclamation will be held in
Jakarta?”
Wikana : “Okay, I agree. After this, Jusuf Kunto will accompany your relative and personal secretary to
Rengasdengklok to pick up Soekarno and Hatta."

And the Old Group and the youth agree that the Proclamation will be held in Jakarta. Initially, Sukarni
refused to carry out the Proclamation in Jakarta, but after Ahmad Subardjo gave a guarantee, Sukarni
expressed his agreement. It was decided that same night for everyone to return to Jakarta.

Around 23.00 WIB, the group from Rengasdengklok arrived in Jakarta. When Ir. Soekarno and Moh.
Hatta came to Admiral Maeda's house, where he was waiting for BM Diah and the Asia Raya newspaper,
Semaun Bakri from Java Kokokai, Sayuti Melik, Iwa Kusumasumantri and PPKI members.

SCENE 4

Meanwhile, Ahmad Subardjo and Iwa Kusumumasumantri came to the residence of the youths to invite
them to the house of Admiral Maeda.

Ahmad Subardjo: "Assalamu'alaikum"

Wikana : "Wa'alaikumsalam. What's wrong, brothers, Ahmad Subardjo and Iwa

Kusumumasumantri, here?"

Iwa Kusumasumantri: "We came here to invite you all to the house of Admiral Maeda, where Ir.
Soekarno, Moh. Hatta and other PPKI members. Please come.”

Sukarni : “No, we are not going there. Isn't there no agreement at all to go to Admiral Maeda's
residence?”

Wikana : "Brother Sukarni is right, we did not have an agreement to use Admiral Maeda's house
beforehand."

Ahmad Subardjo: "That's not it, Brother Wikana. This was done to prevent interference and obstruction
of the Japanese Kempetai. So we beg you very much, come and join the negotiations. At least a
representative from you."
Then the Youth agreed that the only ones who would come would be Chaerul Saleh and Sukarni as
representatives of the youth. Meanwhile, many PPKI members were present at the formulation of the
text of the proclamation at the house of Admiral Maeda.
