Millions of people worldwide want and need
access to a decent education, yet the
typical classroom is constrained in the
number of students it can accommodate.

Massive open online courses, or MOOCs,

are offered. The idea, developed by edX,
was first intended to give businesses the
chance to provide millions of students with
free access to online courses.

The term MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course.

The idea behind the term is described by its originators as
simple and idealistic as creating an open and distributed
learning experience, which reflects, rather than fights, the
internet.

All course content was available through RSS feeds, and

online students could participate through a variety of
collaborative and social tools, including blog posts,
threaded discussions in Moodle, and Second Life online
meetings
