7 Lessons I Wish I

Learned Earlier in
My Lending Career

by Kyle Peterdy
“Character”

is key, but it’s

1
a two-way street

We’re the face of the bank to the client,

and the face of the client to the bank.
Communication

is connection

In-person > Phone > Email. NEVER

pass up an opportunity to speak

directly to a client.

2
3
Collaboration
builds consensus

Relationships WILL start on a

transactional level if we allow them to.
Don’t cave to

4
competitive
pressures

Not every deal is a deal

for our firm.
Financial
recommendations
are not abstract or
theoretical

5
Bankers have lots of candid
financial conversations but,
in general, the average
client does not.
6 Challenging
relationships
are…
challenging
We never seek out bad credits or
difficult clients, but they happen…

And they ARE challenging.

When the status
quo is interrupted,
take a deep breath

7
When a borrower’s
business isn’t doing
well, it WILL require us
to step outside of our
comfort zone.
