Aim
To test an optical fiber link and get its trace using the OTDR
Background Theory
The Vanguard OTDR provides a free trial license opportunity, where we are
expected to obtain the best possible trace. It comprises of a list of parameters,
amongst which include
-Range
-Wavelength
-Refraction Index
-Time acquisition

Requirements
-Vanguard OTDR
-Java runtime environment

Procedure

The vanguard OTDR software was started, and the trial license cable 01 was
selected by double clicking it
The cable carried default values, the test was started in accordance to these
default values
These values were recorded and other values of range, lambda, refractive index
and time were varied and inserted into the parameters and their value recorded
Finally as per the aim, the best possible trace was selected

Calculation
For link 1
IOR=1.475
Attenuation=0.34db

For link 2
At an IOR of 1.6 the attenuation= 2.74
For link 3
At an IOR of 1.82 the attenuation= 4.74
For link 4
At an IOR of 2.1 the attenuation equals 2.88

Conclusion
-At an IOR of 1.82, I obtained a maximum attenuation
-The attenuation varies directly with attenuation
