Terminology 311 Definitions: 3.1.1 General—Defiitions are in accordance with Termi- nology D 883 or F 412. Abbreviations are in accordance wi Terminology D 1600, unless otherwise indicated. Classification 4.1 This specification covers fiberglass fittings defined by type (method of manufacture), grade (general resin type), class (general liner type), catagory (configuration of ining system), and pressure rating ( a single leter disignating the pressure class and method of manufacture) 42 Types: 42.1 Bpe 1—Filament-wound tings manufactured by ‘winding continuous fbrous-glass strand roving or roving tape, either preimpregnated or impregnated during winding, onto a rmandrel, ora liner corresponding tothe fitting shape. 422 Type 2—Compression molded fitings made by apply- ing extemal pressure and heat to a molding compound that is confined within a closed mold, 423 Type 3—Resin transfer molded fitings manufactured by pumping a thermosetting resin into glass reinforcements that have been cut to size and clamped between matched molds. 42.4 Dpe 4Centrifugally cast fittings made by applying resin and reinforcement to the inside of a mold that is rotating ‘and heated, subsequently polymerizing the resin system. 42.5 Tipe $—Contact molded fitings made by applying, resin and reinforcement to a mold orto mitered fllamentwound stock or centrifugally cast pipe stock. Tis procedure shall also cover “spray-up” fittings which are made by spraying resin and reinforeement on a mold or over mitered pipe wound stock “Contact molding” includes both hand lay-up and sry ap manufacturing processes. 4.26 Fittings of Type { through Type S which require thrast blocking or extemal axial restraint when installed shall have the letter “R” appended to the type of designation, ( For instance, a contact molded fiting requiring thrust blocking ‘when installed would be designated a type “SR” 43 Grades: 43.1 Grade !—Epoxy-resin 432 Grade 2—Polyesterresin (see Note 4). 433 Grade 3—Furan-esin Noe 4For pupose of this specifenon, polyesters ice vinyl-eserresins 44 Classes: 44.1 Class A—No liner. 442 Class B—Polyester-resin liner (nonteinforced). 443 Class C—Epoxy-resin liner (nonreinforced). 444 Class E—Polyester-resin liner (reinforced). 44.5 Class F—Epoxy-resin liner (reinforced), 44.6 Class H-—Thermoplastic-resin liner (specifY). 44.7 Class /—Furan-resin liner (seinforced), 4.5 Joint Categories (Method of Joining) 4.5.1 Category |—Taper-to-taper adhesive-bonded joint fit- tings manufactured with a tapered socket to be used in ‘conjunction with a pipe or fitting with a matching spigot section and a suitable adhesive. This joining method provides ‘an interference fit over the entire length of the bond line. 4.5.2 Category 2—Straight-taper adhesive-bonded joint fit- ting manufactured with a tapered socket to be used witha pipe or fitting with an untapered spigot section and a suitable . This joining method provides an interference fit at the bottom of the socket. 453 Category 3—Staight adhesive bonded joint Siting manufactured with an untapered socket for use with a pipe oF fitting with an untapered spigot and a suitable adhesive. This joining provides no interference fit. 454 Category 4—Butt and stop joint made by a contact molding process which involves hand lay-up with glass-woven roving or chopped strand mat, or both, whichis saturated with 45:5 Category S—Flanged fitings are available as all cutlets fanged or as fange-by-joint specified in this specfica- tion. Flanges are in compliance with Specification D 4024 45.6 Category 6—Elastomeri (gasket) sealed joins with sealant manufactured in compliance with Specification F 477 for joints which have integral longitudinal restraint and do not require thrust blocking or external longitudinal restraint 45.7 Category 7—Elastomeric (gasket) sealed jos with seals manufactured in compliance with Specification F 477 for joints which require thrust blocking or extemal longirainal restraint. ‘46 Pressure Rating—Pressure rating shall be categorized by a single leter designation. Pressure designations ae shown in Table 1. The pressure ratings are applicable forthe tempera- ture at which the fitings were tested and for lower tempera- tures down to ~S0°F (46°C). When agreed upon berween purchaser and manufacturer, pressure ratings determined by tests conducted following Practice D 2992 are accepable ‘417 Designation Code—The fitting designation code shall consist of the abbreviation RTRF or RPMF followed by the ‘ype, grade, and class in Arabic numerals and the pressure rating category asa capital leter. Materials 5.1 Fitings manufactured in accordance with this specifica: tion shall be composed of reinforcement embedded in of surrounded by cured thermosetting-esin. Requirements 6.1 Workmanship —The fitings sall be fice of ll defects including indentations, delaminations, bubbles, pin holes, for eign inclusions, and resin starved arcs, which, due to ther nature, degree, or extent, detrimentally act te strength and serviceability ofthe fing. The fiting shall be as uniform as commercially practicable in color, opacity, and other physical properties. 6.2 Dimensions and Tolerances—All flanged fittings shall conform tothe centerline to flange face dimensions, hole size and bole patter, and tolermces of ANSI B16.5 short or long radius type, or otherwise as agreed upon between the manie facturer and purchaser. Fitting centerline to end dimensions, taper angles, taper length, or combinations thereof, will vary for non-fanged joining systems and the individual manufac- turer sall be consulted for dimensions. Dimensions shall be smeasured in accordance with 73. 6.3 Fittings and Connections Pressure Test Requirements — Fittings, couplings, and connections shall meet the following quali tion requirements when tested with restrained ends for ‘Type 6 fittings, and unrestrained ends for other type fittings, in accordance with 7.4.1 for short term hydrostatic strength tests, and 7.4.2 for cyclic or static tests. 63.1 Each type of component and its feld-jointed configu- ration shall be capable of sustaining a short-time hydrostatic pressure, of atleast four times its eyclic-rated pressure or three times its stati-rated pressure for 1 min without visible weeping or leakage. 63.2 Each component shall meet or exceed the cyclic or static-test requirements of 7.4.2. 64 Degree of Cure—The limits and methods of determin- ing degree of cure shall be in accordance with 6.4.1 or 6.4.2, as. ‘agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer. 64.1 Percent Extractable Material—Fittings shall have no ‘more than 3 % extractable material when tested in accordance with 7.5 64.2 Glass Transition Temperature (Te)—The Te for each resin used, as determined by some thermal analysis method, shall be no less than a minimum statistically significant value established by the manufacturer. Test Methods 7.1 Conditioning—When conditioning is required, and in all cases of disagreement, condition the test specimens at 73.4 + 36°F (23 = 2°C) and 50 = 5% relative humidity for not Jess than 40 h prior to test, in accordance with Procedure A of Practice D618. 12 Test Conditions —The tests may be conducted at ambi ent temperature and humidity conditions. When controlled environment testing is speified, tests shall be conducted in the Standard Laboratory Atmosphere of 73.4 = 3.6°F (23 + 2°C) and 50 + 5% relative humidity. When elevated temperature testing is specified, conduct the tests atthe design temperature FF 3°O), 73 Dimensions and Tolerances—Measure fiting dimen- sions in accordance with applicable documents and Practice 1D 3567. Measure flange dimensions with a micrometer or venir calipers, or other suitable measuring devices accurate to within +0.001 in, (002 mm). Diameters shall be determined by averaging a minimum of four measurements eqully spaced circumferential. 14 Pressure Tess: TA. Short-Term Hydrostatic Strength Test—Short-term hy- drostatic failure pressure tests to determine compliance with 663 performed at ambient temperature in accordance with Test Method D 1599 using specimens and sizes as described in 743. Leaking pat the gasket interface of flanged fiings and elastomeric sealed fitings is permissible during this test, provided the pressure is atleast two times the rating when the leak occurs. This information shall be contained in the test report 142 Cycle or Static Pressure Test 742.1 Using the cyclic test data or static test data and regression analysis as developed forthe pipe, following Prac- tice D 2992, Procedure A or B, constrict a regression line converting the stress (or strain) versus cycle data orstess (or strain) versus time data to pressure versus cycle or time data for Pipe ofthe intended pressure class. 742.2 For eyelic pressure tests, the gage pressure at the peak pressure of the cycle shal be not less than 1¥4 nor more than 2 times the pressure rating of the fitting. The cycle amplitude pressure shall be atleast 80 % of the selected peak pressure 7.423 For static pressure tess, the gage pressure shall be no less than 2 times and no more than 2¥% times the fiting static pressure rating. (0.5 m) long or 2 diameters, whichever is longer, using the joining method, design, and adhesive intended for field assembly. Specimen diameters for test in each configuration shall include the maximum product size in each pressure class and for each method of manufacture. METHOD OF TEST FOR THE DETERMINAITON OF DEGREE OF CURE BY DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING ‘CALORIMETRY (DSC) ALI Scope 1.1.1 This test determines whether the degree of cure of a fiberglass fitting test specimen meets the quality control re- quirements determined by statistical analysis of typical pro- duction products. 12. Terminology A121 Definition: A12.1.1 glass transition temperature—the midpoint of the inflection temperature at the DSC curve (heat flow versus temperature), AL3 Apparatus A13.1 Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC). ALS Test Specimens 1.4.1 Size—The size of the specimen is limited by the size of the DSC sample pan. All specimens can be a chip or filed into a fine powder to provide easy weighing and uniform ‘contact with the pan ‘1.4.2 Location—For any given fitting, a sample should be taken 0 to 10 mils (0 t0 0.025 m) from the outer surface, as well as 0 to 10 mils from the inner surface. Ifthe fitting has a liner, a specimen should be taken from the liner, a well asthe inner and outer edges of the overwrap.
