Zika Not a Real Priority

I read your Aug. 2 editorial, “Congress can’t ignore Zika,” with frustration and dismay.
The editorial states that “the threat from Zika is growing” and goes on to express
disappointment with Congress for not acting faster and not providing more funding to
halt the spread of the disease. The fear of the spread of Zika exists because the media
have blown the danger way out of proportion and thus have created a panic in the country.
Your editorial ignores the facts and adds to the fear of Zika.

If one ignores emotions and looks at facts, one will see that there is no need for panic.
First, Zika is a relatively mild virus and only poses a serious threat to unborn babies. The
facts are that in 2015, in the U.S., there were an estimated 1.7 million new cases of cancer
and 589,430 deaths due to cancer. Coronary disease causes an estimated 610,000 deaths
per year. In addition, there are about 5,600 new cases of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) a
year. This is a terminal disease with no known cure. There are an estimated 29 million
cases of diabetes in the U.S. Other serious diseases include Parkinson’s disease,
Alzheimer’s and drug and alcohol addiction. Yet the known cases of Zika in the U.S. are
less than 2,000 and deaths are zero.

Yes, something needs to be done to stop or control the spread of Zika, but I think that a
priority needs to be established based upon the facts, and the facts warrant a low priority.
Any government money spent on disease control must be spent wisely and effectively
and, in my opinion, Zika ranks way down on the priority list.
