Tittle: The Last Kingdom

Author: Bernard Cornwell

Genre: Historical novel, Historical Fiction

The author Bernard Cornwell was inspired to write The Last Kingdom after finding a direct family
connection through meeting his real father, William Outhred. He was 58 when he met his father, they
had a family tree, it went all the way back to the 6th century. They were the Lords of Bebbanburg
(Bamburgh Castle) in Northumberland, there was an Uhtred, after he discovered that he is a
descendant of Uhtred.

The story is seen through the eyes of Uhtred, a dispossessed nobleman, who is captured as a
child by the Danes and then raised by them so that, by the time the Northmen begin their assault on
Wessex which Alfred’s kingdom and the last territory in English hands, Uhtred almost thinks of himself
as a Dane. He certainly has no love for Alfred, whom he considers a pious weakling and no match for
Viking savagery, yet when Alfred unexpectedly defeats the Danes and the Danes themselves turn on
Uhtred, he is finally forced to choose sides. By now he is a young man, in love, trained to fight and ready
to take his place in the dreaded shield wall.

As it’s a historical series, many aspects of the plot reflect history, including Alfred the Great’s
desire to see a unified Kingdom of England. Everyone’s beloved Saxon-raised-by-Danes Uhtred of
Bebbanburg who is the main protagonist of the books who lived in Bebbanburg which is now known by
the modern name of Bamburgh. Above all, though, he wishes to recover his father’s land, the
enchanting fort of Bebbanburg by the wild northern sea.

The book made me realized how they suffer to build – rebuild and protect their land and people
over the invaders. And shows us to be a religious and never forget to worship GOD, have a word of
honour, team-work with a good and strong leader, sacrifices, love, betrayal and many more that will
inspire you to keep on reading until the end of it. In every battle of our lives don’t forget where you
came from even its success or failure. This book is one of the best books that you will never missed out
and you will like it too even we are not from England.
