ACTIVITY

Knowing that for the beam shown the allowable stress is 12 ksi in tension and 16 ksi in
compression, determine the largest couple M that can be applied.

PROBLEM SOLVING
1. The composite beam shown is formed of a wood beam (100 mm x 150 mm actual
dimensions) and a steel reinforcing plate (100 mm wide and 12 mm thick). The beam is
subjected to a positive bending moment M=6kN-m. Using the transformed-section method,
calculate the largest tensile and compressive stresses in the wood (material 1) and the
maximum and minimum tensile stresses in the steel (material 2) if 𝐸1 =10.5 GPa and 𝐸2 =210
GPa.

2. An inverted precast concrete T-beam is used to support precast double-tee floor beams in
a parking deck. Beam dimensions are b=500 mm, bw=300 mm, d=600 mm and tf=100
mm. Steel reinforcement consists of four bars each with a 25-mm diameter. The modulus
of elasticity for the concrete is Ec=25 GPa, while that of the steel is Es=200 GPa. Allowable
stresses for concrete and steel are 𝜎𝐵𝐶 =9.3 MPa and 𝜎𝐴𝑆 =137 MPa, respectively.
a. Use the transformed section (in which the concrete in tension is neglected and the steel
reinforcing bars are converted to the equivalent concrete) to find the maximum
permissible moment that can be applied to this beam.
b. Repeat part (a) if the beam is rotated 180°, as shown in third figure, and if the steel
reinforcement remains in the bottom tension zone.
