The subject presents information about organismal biology, genetics, evolution and the origin of
biodiversity, and systematics. It emphasizes biology concepts such as the organ systems of plants and
animals, feedback mechanisms, theories of evolution, taxonomy and nomenclature. It highlights
applications of biology in the field of medicine, health, technology, sports and agriculture.
This module presents the science of biology, which includes concepts that will expand the students’
understanding These are some of the questions that you are going to find answers in this lesson. Hence,
remember to search for the answer to the following question(s):
How is the geologic time scale divided?
What are the major events in each major period?
What are the characteristics of the major groups of organisms present during a time
period?
CONTENT STANDARD
The students demonstrate an understanding of evolution, the origin of biodiversity, and the
systematics based on evolutionary relationships.
PERFORMANCE STANDARD
The learner should be able to create a personal timeline and compare it with the geologic
time scale and design a poster tracing evolutionary changes in a crop plant that occurred through
domestication.

MODULE MAP
You will be dealing to enhance the understanding of the principles and concepts in the study of
biology particularly the diversity of living organisms, their structure, function and evolution.
At the end of this quarter, you will be able to use their understanding of evolution and biodiversity to
trace the evolution, the origin of biodiversity and the systematics based on evolutionary relationships.
To give you an overview of the lesson, here is the simple module map of the above lessons that you

LEARNING TARGETS
To create the most effective and meaningful students’ learning, this module is designed by providing
appropriate learning targets to be used along with the teacher to aim for and assess your
understanding.
As we start this lesson, you are going to study about the History of Life on Earth.
Many renowned scientists in the past were puzzled with the question about Life on Earth – why
there are so many different species on the planet? Some even questioned the age of the Earth, which they
believed may have a link on the time it has supported life. Through countless scientific investigations and
discoveries, scientists struggled to learn the age of its formation. By radiometric dating or rocks in its ever-
changing crust and studying moon rocks and fallen meteorites, scientists have estimated that Earth is about
4.54 billion years old, with an error of 50 million years. Through the years, Earth has become witness to
countless life forms that have lived in its every conceivable corner. Life emerged about 3.8 billion years
ago with prokaryotic organisms, while multicellular organisms evolved only in the last 540 million
years. Forests (385 million years ago) and land plants (475 million years ago) have followed,
populating the planet. Mammals have only evolved until 200 million years ago, whereas, Homo
sapiens first appeared 200, 000 years ago, which makes us only 0.004 percent old in Earth’s life history.
Because it would be difficult to map Earth’s life long history in our existing calendar that has months, years,
or centuries, geologists have devised another scale to show Earth’s history. They call Earth’s record of the
appearance of life forms and geological events as geologic time scale. To construct the geologic time
scale, geologists have examined the different rock layers and fossil records all throughout the world, and
placed rocks in the order of relative age using radioactive dating.
Geological Time Scale
1. Eons
The geologic time scale starts with the highest-level units -eons and eras. Earth’s history has
been divided into four eons. Hadean is the oldest eon and was officially recognized only in 2012. Its
name was derived from the word Hades (god of the underworld in Greek mythology), referring to the
hellish conditions and violent cosmic collisions that characterized Earth 4 billion years ago. Archaean
eon is still not much clear among the geologists due to the few fossil or mineral evidence that could
support it. Proterozoic eon is characterized by the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere due to the
emergence of cyanobacteria, allowing other organisms, such as eukaryotes and other multicellular
organisms to live. Phanerozoic eon spans within the past 541 million years up to present. The eon is
linked with the Cambrian explosion, which is a rapid evolutionary event when complex organisms
believed to have first evolved on Earth appeared.
2. Eras
The geologic time scale begins with a long span called Precambrian covering about 88 percent of
Earth’s life history. The earliest forms of organisms that first emerged in this Precambrian Earth were
probably similar to present-day bacteria. Geologists have divided the rest of the Earth’s history into three
long time units called eras ------ Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenezoic.
Paleozoic Era
(paleo means “ancient” or “early”, zoic means
“life”) era lasted for 300 million years. Many of the
organisms that have emerged during this period were
invertebrates or animals without backbones.
Mesozoic Era
(meso means “middle”) era lasted 180 million
years and is knows for being the age of dinosaurs,
although mammals have already evolved in this
particular era.
Cenozoic Era
(ceno means “latest”) era began 65 million
years ago until present. It is also known as the Age of
Mammals because they are most common and
dominant species of this era.
Geologists further subdivided in eras into periods, which range from tens, of million years to
less than two million years in length. Mesozoic era is subdivided into three periods: Triassic, Jurassic
and Cretaceous. Periods have been further subdivided by geologists into epochs. Because the
Cenozoic era is almost complete in terms of the fossil records, it would be easier for geologists to
further examine it using epochs.
Our planet has been a major factor in the emergence and disappearance of many organisms
that diversify into various forms just to survive. From single celled bacteria to the biggest whale, all
provide uniqueness to Earth’s colorful landscape.
CAMBRIAN EXPLOSION is the belief that there was a sudden, apparent explosion of diversity in life
forms about 545 million years ago. The explosion created the complexity of multi-celled organisms in a
relatively short time frame of 5 to 10 million years. This explosion also created most of the major extant
animal groups today
The start of the Cambrian was characterized by the breaking up of supercontinent Gondwana into
smaller land masses opening up new environmental niches where organisms can colonize and specialize.
Processing Questions:
1. What are the divisions of geologic time scale?
2. How is the geologic time scale divided?
3. Why is the geologic time scale important?
Directions: Create a pie chart to show the percentage of time in each Era of geologic time represents in the
Geologic Time Scale: Use coloring materials to recognize their specific time then label it.
Legend: Red – Cenozoic Era
Blue – Mesozoic Era
Green – Paleozoic Era
Yellow – Precambrian Time
