Harland David Sanders

Do you often see the photo of an old man in white suit at the KFC restaurant? He is Harland David
Sanders or sometimes called Harland Sanders, the founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC). He is
one of the successful American entrepreneurs. People often call him Colonel Sanders although he
was not an ármy.

Harland David Sanders was born in Kentucky, September 9th, 1890. He was the eldest child in a
family of five. His father worked in the coal mining of Kentucky and died when he was still young.
Because of that, he had to take care of his younger brother and sister. So, Harland Sanders learned
everything including cooking. He got the skill of making fried chicken from his mother.

Harland made his fried chicken seasoned with the original blend of eleven herbs and spices. It
gave the typical flavour. Then, he built a restaurant. After running the restaurant for several years,
Sanders had to close it. Harland Sanders found himself penniless. He retired and received the social
security check from the government. At the time, he convinced others to invest in his delicious fried
chicken recipe, and Kentucky Fried Chicken was born.
