Motivation For many years’ energy production has been carried

out using non-renewable materials such as coal, oil or gas. Even
nuclear power which is often considered as being sustainable has a
finite amount of material that it can utilize. These traditional methods
have caused vast amounts of damage to the environment. The burning
of fossil fuels has resulted in an increase in global temperatures,
causing fires, melting of ice caps and smog filled cities. As well as
this, waste materials have been leaked into surrounding water
channels disrupting the local ecosystems. Nuclear energy is not
without its faults, since it is dangerous when not operated properly
this has resulted in catastrophic explosions rendering vast areas of
land uninhabitable, such as the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. This has
called for a change in the way that energy is produced, looking
towards more sustainable projects. Renewable energy has gained
large amounts of funding to create new and innovative methods of
energy generation [22]. Solar and wind are two methods that have
been implemented but they have considerable limitations in the UK
often being located in places of natural beauty and where direct sun
light is not very constant. An option that the UK does have in
abundance is water. Hydro plants require vast amounts of land to be
flooded which makes it hard to implement, but since the UK is an
island there are thousands of miles of coastline waiting to be
harnessed. The proposed lagoon is the first in a whole array of
lagoons planned for the UK. This will act as a benchmark and a way
to experiment with possible building techniques and different
technologies which will pave the way for other lagoons to be
constructed, hoping to be powering 8% of the UK energy demand by
2027 [20]. B. Objective Tidal power is a relatively new form of
generating power with only a handful of projects around the world
being in operation. The benefits of tidal power are that it generates
power four guaranteed times each day; this makes prediction of power
generation easy since it will not vary massively. A project has been
proposed for Swansea Bay with the construction of a 9.5Km sea wall.
This would be the first project of its kind, hoping to pioneer the way
in tidal power. This project means to analyse the wave and tide
conditions in Swansea Bay and create a preliminary design for a
section of sea
