Pharmacotherapy for Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Disorder
One of the pertinent roles of an APRN is to gather information about patients to determine an accurate
diagnosis and provide effective patient care. This paper focused on the diagnosis of the patient and
justification for the drug therapy plan based on the patient’s history, diagnosis, and current medications.
Based on the patient’s presenting symptoms and medical history, is diagnosed with acute pancreatitis.
Acute pancreatic is inflammation of the pancreas, which is caused by overeating or drinking alcohol.
Symptoms include RUQ pain, nausea, and vomiting. patient reported that her symptoms started one
hour after a large dinner with her and had an episode of vomiting before presentation, pain from acute
pancreatitis can cause nausea and vomiting, and infection; reflecting the lab results of increased WBC of
13,000mm3. Amylase level is high, which also indicates inflammation of the pancreas.
Drug therapy
Acute pancreatitis can be treated with pain medicine and antibiotics by mouth or IV. Tylenol for pain
and imipenem 500mg IV tid x14 days to reduce the rate of septic complication, fluid hydration IV, and
monitor metabolic complication. Proton pump inhibitor omeprazole can also be used to suppress
Conclusion
Since the symptoms presented by patients with gastrointestinal (GI) problems are frequently non-
specific (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). It is essential for APRNs to conduct a thorough assessment to
determine the underlying source of the symptoms. More testing must be conducted to diagnose the
patient adequately. Tests include stool tests, CT scans, ultrasound, and pancreatic function tests.
