LB = lower boundary of Q k class
N = total frequency

f Qk= frequency of the Qk class
i = class interval size
k = nth quartile, where n = 1, 2 and 3 only

************************************Illustrative examples************************************
The table below shows the result of a 50-item test in Grade 10 Mathematics of 50 students.
Calculate the following: 1. Q1 2. Q2 3. Q 3

To calculate those values, we must first accomplish the column for lower boundaries and less than cumulative
frequency.
Class Interval Score Frequency (f)
46-50 4
41-45 8
36-40 11
31-35 9
26-30 12
21-25 6
N = _______

1
1. Calculate Q1.
Step 1: Solve for Q1 class. (Since we are solving for the class interval rather than the location, there is
no +1 in the formula.)
Formula:
kN
Q1 class =
4
Given: k = ____, N = ____
Solve:
Q1 class = ¿ ¿
Q1 class =_______

Step 2: Locate the class interval where the _______ score lies. And list down the given.

i = __ (11,12,13,14,15) N = 50
Given:
LB = _____ fQ1 = _____
cfb = _____ i = ______
kN
N = _____ = _____
4
Note:
1. Lower class limits are always located at the left side of the class interval (Highlighted by yellow). To obtain
Lower boundaries use this (Lower class limits – 0.50).
2. Less than cumulative frequency (<cf) can be obtained by by adding successively the frequencies of all the
previous classes including the class against which it is written. It started from the lowest to the highest size.
Write 6 on the last row (4th column). Then, add 6 and 12 = 18 and so on…
3. N can be obtained by adding the frequencies of all the classes.

Step 3: Find the value of Quartile 1. (Always round off your answer to the nearest hundredths)

2. Calculate Q2. (You may refer to the table in page 2)
Step 1: Solve for Q2 class. (Since we are solving for the class interval rather than the location, there is no +1 in
the formula.)

3. Calculate the Quartile 3.
Step 1: Solve for Q3 class. (Since we are solving for the class interval rather than the location, there is no +1 in
the formula.)
Formula:
