It must be said in case of Godard that his political and other references may be global, but the

ambience of his films is not universal. Film makers like Tomas Alea and Satyajit Ray have

expressed ample admiration for Godard for opening up avenues of expression. But ultimately

Godard is limited by his euro-centric avant garde context. He can be best summarised a sa classic

case of subversive grammarian, who liberated the language of cinema. But subsequently forgot

that to an artist language matters more than discussion of grammar.

" Cinema is the one art form where the author can see himself as the creator unconditional

reality, quite literally of his own world. In cinema man's innate drive to self-assertion finds one

of its fullest and most direct means of realisation. A film is an emotional reality, and that is how

audience receives it - as a second reality.

…That is why I resist structuralist attempts to look at a frame as a sign of something else, the

meaning of which is summed up in the shot., yet that is what such an approach attempts. " Andre

Tarkovsky [Sculpting in Time : Reflections on the Cinema, The Bodley Head, London 1986].
