IT IN SOCIETY

Part III
12.4 Technology Enhanced Learning
Technology Enhanced
Learning: Introduction
• Technological enhancement largely
influences the society through the
introduction of online learning & online
courses
• Tutorials available on website like
YouTube
• More educationally oriented sites like
Lynda.com & edx.org
• Except for cost of internet connection,
ppl can gain access to teaching without
a fee
• Can learn at own pace & in own time
Technology Enhanced
Learning: Introduction
• Quality of resources available
through these sites can often
differ greatly
• No governing body on YouTube
looking at the level of teaching
• Hard & time-consuming to filter
& identify the tutorials that are of
high quality
• Could use tutorial that teach
them incorrectly
Technology Enhanced
Learning: Types
• Computer-based training
• Online tutorials
• Networked learning
• MOOC
• Video conferencing
COMPUTER-BASED
TRAINING

Businesses & organizations can create extensive training programs for

staffs that can be accessed using computer
Training resources (can be a mixture of text, sound, video & images to
present training info in the most cost-effective way) created are
available
No tutor
Designed to deliver small chunks of training to ppl, as a step-by-step
process
Allow users to learn at own pace
COMPUTER-BASED
TRAINING (CONT…)
Many companies develop and make available this
kind of training to staff to develop work skills
Workers can improve knowledge & skillset to a
point that allows them to be awarded a pay rise or a
promotion
Can have tests incorporated into the training that
are automatically marked & can show how much
the users have learned
COMPUTER-BASED TRAINING
PROS CONS

• Users can learn at own pace • In case of inquiry, no tutor to answer &
• A variety of media can be used to create explain
an interesting set of resources • Staff may not be motivated to follow the
training due to privacy and mandatory
• Staff can improve own skills set &
issue
knowledge – promotion & additional
pay
Online One of the biggest online
Tutorials platforms used is YouTube

Extensive set of tutorials & variety

of topics like baking a cake, fixing
a car, putting on makeup

Delivered using different media &

aim to teach viewer to achieve a
specific goal/outcome
Online Tutorials
PROS CONS
• Users can view the tutorial repeatedly till • Quality may differ greatly & some maybe
they completely understand in achieving low – time consuming to find one that is
the desired outcome good
• Wide & complete coverage • Possibility of incorrect teaching,
depending on ability of the educator
• User can learn in own time & at own
pace
• Different media can be used for an
informative tutorial
A form of online collaborative
Networked learning that helps learners to
Learning connect with other learners & tutors

Help learners to develop

relationships among each other &
with tutors

A no. of ppl from whom learners can

gain feedback & partake discussion
Networked Aim: learners to support the
learning of other learners
Learning
(CONT…)
Facilitated by tutor who actively
encourage participation

Learners are asked thoughts,

opinion & resources from their
work or educational practices
Other learners are asked to comment
Networked of each other’s contributions
Learning
(Cont…)
Offering advice on how to improve
skills & knowledge

Time scales are more limited as the

current will be depending on everyone
participating in a similar time frame
Networked Learning
PROS CONS
• Learners can build relationships that they could take • Difficulty in contributing to the process as learners are
forward beyond the course not sure what to give as feedback
• Learners exposed to ability to gain & provide feedback – • Some learners will be over-bearing & dominating all the
build new skill & knowledge & offer them to others discussion. Some tutors may find these ppl difficult to
manage
• Learners will have greater motivation to complete the
task as the learning of others is also dependent on them • Bias learners’ feedback - do not feel comfortable
criticizing the work of others
• If some learners do not complete task, or provide the
necessary feedback, this limit the learning ability of
other users, as time scale for learning are more limited
Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOC)
• One of the biggest online learning methods
• Not limited in no. of ppl that access & have open access
using the web
• Free & is used by large no. of learners at any one time
• Include filmed lectures & other resources, have forum
that enables interaction with other learners & educators
• Allow ppl in similar industries to learn more about their
industry from other ppl within that industry
• Allow this to happen at the convenience of learner
Massive Open Online
Courses (MOOC)(Cont…)
• Can be used to develop additional career skills or explore
new interest
• Progress could be assessed using peer review, written
assignment or online test that are automatically marked
• May not provide a formal professional qualification but
can demonstrate that a person can expand his/her own
learning, in their own time – appealing to an employer

MOOC
PROS CONS
• Large selection of courses available • Overwhelming due to large no. of courses & might
confuse on which one would be the best
• Can provide an employee with a competitive advantage
as it Demonstrates the motivation to learn & improve in • Educator may not have time to dedicate to helping each
their own time other due to large no. of participants
• Free of charge • Difficult monitoring process
• Large number of participants – ppl do not have to wait • Some learners may struggle with the motivation to
for a place to become available complete the tasks, & may only choose to complete those
properly that they know will be assessed
• Users can learn at own pace & in own time, often only
limited by the submission deadline for assignments
Video Conferencing
• When ppl communicate using computers,
displaying a video stream, using an internet
connection
• The video will often show the user & any other
resources that they want to provide
• The software has a facility allowing user to share
content on screen with other users that are part
of the conference
Video Conferencing
(Cont…)
• Teaching & learning can be carried out using
video conferencing
• An educator can carry out a lesson that allows
them to speak to other learners & also show
them any resources that can aid the learning
process
• This can feel like a more personal learning
experience as learners are able to see & speak to
the educator
Video Conferencing
(Cont…)
• Quality of lesson depends on communication
ability of educator, quality of software & internet
connection
• Require high broadband speed for smooth
viewing of video for users
• Allow learners to ask questions in real time &
clarify any point of learning that they maybe
unsure about
Video Conferencing
PROS CONS
• Real-time interaction improves level of • Software may require high broadband speeds
understanding and learning that may not be available in some areas
• Increased motivation for learner due to higher • Only small no. of learners will be able to be
engagement – learners can see & hear part of the conference, & this will be limited by
educators, this may feel like a more personal capabilities of software & internet connection
learning experience – some ppl waiting a long time for a place on a
course
• Educators can often share what is displayed on
screen with other learners, which could be
useful if a demonstration needs to be given
Technology Enhanced Learning:
Conclusion
• Vary a lot in terms of quality, cost & subjects offered
• Regardless of for self-interest or accreditation, it is often much easier to learn ay your own pace in
your own time
• It is sometimes difficult to find exact course that you want due to large no. of course available
• Another issue is the difficulty in finding teachers that are able to breakdown problems & help
students in the process
• This is partly because of the difficulty in finding some one that is capable or because of the way in
which customers want to learn
• Do they preferred to be lectured or they want a small bit of info & then to be set a task & learn as
they go?
• Summarize the platforms
of technology enhance
learning in a table
• Also, briefly compare &
contrast among the types
• Match the type that should
be used under each
circumstance/situation
