Works FLOW TEST OF SHRINKKOMP GROUT Eff. Date: 31.08.2006

1. Scope: This procedure covers the method for sampling & determining CCS, Expansion and flow
test of shrinkkomp grout.

2. Apparatus: (i) Buckets of 15 to 20 lits. Capacity.

(ii) Trowel, Measuring cylinder of 1000 cc.
(iii) Flow table conforming to ASTM C 230 – 83.
(iv) Steel gang, mould (three compartments or four compartments) having
dimension of each specimen 40 X 40 X 160 mm.
(v) Steel gang moulds expansion test two compartments having dimension of
each specimen 12” X 12” X 2”.
(vi) Curing chamber for maintaining temp. 27 + 2°C and relating humidity of not
less than 90% and water bath of temp. 27 + 2°C.
(vii) CCS machine having 250 KN and 1000 KN capacity dial.
(viii) Soil test machine for measuring expansion.

3. Sampling Plan:

From Loose Heaps: - For sampling shrinkkomp grout from loose heaps in the shop floor

ƒ Draw separate sample for each unloaded mill charge. Divide each sample into
three approximately equal parts by drawing demarcation lines on the surface of
the heap in each part, locate five point evenly distributed over the whole surface
of the part.

ƒ With a scoop or spatula, draw equal quantities of material from each of the
fifteen points, at different depths. Collect about 3 Kg of sample. Eep each
sample separately in polythene bags.

ƒ Mix three or five separate unloaded charge sample and reduce by coning and
quartering to about 6 Kg. This is the laboratory sample for inspection lot. Out of 6
Kg, 3 Kg are require to make CCS specimen and another 3 Kg for expansion
and flow test.

For flow: - Take recommended percentage of water in bucket. Add 3 Kg of laboratory sample
and
mix thoroughly with trowel. Water temp. should be 27 + 2°C. Keep this mixture in
the bucket for 10 mins. Check flow of the material on flow table, Check flowability
as laid down below –

ƒ Wipe the flow - tabletop until clean and dry and place the flow mould at the
centre. Fill the mould with mix and level by hand. Carefully remove any water
and mix from around the edge of the mould. Lift the mould away from the
shrinkkomp grout immediately.

ƒ Allow the shrinkkomp grout to spread under free flow conditions with five strokes.
After 1 min. measure the base diameter of the shrinkkomp grout at eight
equivalently spaced intervals by using graduated scale.

Calculation:
Flow = (Average base diameter) – (Original base diameter) X 100%
( Original base diameter)

(ii) For Expansion: - Same mixture as prepared in para 4.1 is used for filling up expansion
mould after flow test. After hardening (check by thumb impression)
place two brass studs at distance of 200 to 203 mm. from both edges
of the specimen along the centre line of the length. This is done by
using dental cement paste.

ƒ After drying out of the dental solution take the initial lenth between
the studs with the help of soil test machine.

ƒ Remove the specimen from the mould and place under water bath
for seven days.

ƒ Take out the specimen after seven days and take final length
between studs with the help of Soil-Test machine.

Calculation:

Expansion = Final reading – initial reading X 100%

Initial reading

(iii) For CCS: -

ƒ Take recommended % of water in bucket. Water temp. should be
27 + 2°C. Add 3 Kg of laboratory sample and mix thoroughly with
trowel.

ƒ Keep this mixture in the bucket for 5 to 6 min. Fill up the steel
gang mould of 40 X 40 X 160 mm for CCS testing. Place the steel
plate over the gang mould & then place 10 – 15 Kg counter weight
over the steel plate. Shift the gang mould along with steel plate &
counter weight in the curing chamber for 24 hrs. Inside the temp.
of the curing chamber will be 27 + 2°C and relative humidity more
than 90% is to be maintained.

ƒ Remove the gang mould from the curing chamber and take out
specimen for 1 day CCS test specimen in CCS machine after air-
drying as mentioned in IS 10570 – 1983.

ƒ For 3 days & 7 days CCS remove gang mould along with
specimen steel plate & counter weight from the curing chamber
and place under water for 2 days &6 days respectively. Do the
CCS after air-drying as mentioned in IS 10570 – 1983.

ƒ For 28 days CCS repeat the procedure as mentioned in previous

para. After 7 days take out specimen from the mould and keep
this specimen under water bath for remaining 21 days. Do the
CCS After air-drying as mentioned in IS – 10570 – 1983.
