WEBSITE: www.sbmp.com.‘Alexandru Pagcanu (pronounced Pash-KAH.-noo) was born and diedin Bucharest, Romapia.
He was a composer of choral, orchestral, and chamber music, and a member of the facblty
of the Music Conservatory in Bucharest. He published several books and journal articles
‘on Romanian folksongs, choral arranging, music theory, and composition.
The Compo:
CChindla (pronounced keen-DEE-uh) is perhaps Pagcann’s most famous composition, Its
based on an instrumental Romanian folk dance by the same name. Chindia, besides being
the name of a folk dance, refers both to the time of day just before the sun sets art to the
place in the sky where the sun goes down. The dance is performed by both men and women.
ima closed circle, the dancer's arms on each other's shoulders. A vigorous dance, it uses
small steps, and may inelude amusing, somewhat athletic stunts. One can picture this festive
dance being performed outside atthe end of the day.
‘There are no words inthis ong, only Pascanu’s imaginative use of descriptive mono-sllables,
(Musicians will recognize a brief passage of solfeggio in the soprano part at the end ofthe
andante section.) Romanian vowel pronunciation isthe same as lalizn, AH, EH, EE, OH,
(00, unless there is diacrtieal mark over the vowel—there are none in this piece,
Although the piano part was added by the composer, he preferred to hear the piece sung
‘unaccompanied,
