How we grow deeper into the gospel? How we grow wider in the gospel ?

Love of God…. Pinakamalalaim na dagat .. Kahit nakapag-scuba dive ka na, di mo pa

rin nasisisid ang pinakailalim nito. It is also like the highest mountain. Kahit
nakapag-hike ka na, di mo pa rin naaakyat ang pinakatuktok nito. Kahit
nakasakay ka sa airplane, hindi mo pa naaabot ang sukdulan ng langit… It is
also like the widest field. Pinakamalawak sa kalawakan… Kahit nakapagsimula
ka nang magtravel, di mo pa rin nararating ang pinakadulo nito… bawat sulok ng
mundo, kung saan may Pilipino… May we Christians resolve, this year and
beyond, to grow deeper in our affection for Jesus, higher in our adoration of God,
and wider in our ambition for the spread of the gospel and the glory of God
among all the nations.
May we resolve to go deeper into the gospel, to the higher and go wider into the
gospel… This is not just something personal… but a corporate mission…
To turn irreligious people into fully devoted followers of Christ.”
Only the gospel can truly motivate us. Only the gospel through the Spirit can
empower us.
Alam nyo po yun, parang kape lang po yan.. (dati 3 in 1) pero nung nakatikim ng
barakong kape.. hindi ka papayag na titikim ka pa ng iba ehh! Ang gusto mo ay
puro tapos di ka kontento sa iisang tasa.. ang gusto mo ay madami pa! at
minsan pa, ibinibigay mo pa sa iba… so that Others can experience the
satisfaction of one of God’s marvelous creations! But in the gospel, we have
something infinitely better than coffee. Kapag natikman mo ang puro, si Cristo at
wala nang iba, you will want more and more of Jesus. At gusto mo ring
maipakilala siya sa iba so that they can also taste and see that the Lord is good.
Sa dami ng mga hindrances and excuses na meron tayo – like our sins and our
sufferings – for not diving deep, aiming higher, and reaching wider in the
Christian life, we need more of the gospel. mahalaga na magreflect tayo muna sa
gospel realities na nakasulat three verses prior to that story. Let’s read
John 3:34-36: “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives
the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things
into his hand. 36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not
obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.”
The Father loves His Son. The Father loves us through His Son. 35 The
Father loves the Son and has given all things into his hand.
Bago tayo magreflect sa pag-ibig ng Diyos para sa atin, “For God so loved the
world…” (3:16), tama lang na magreflect muna tayo sa pag-ibig ng Diyos Ama sa
Diyos Anak. From eternity past, wala pa tayo, God is already existing as a Trinity
– Father, Son and Spirit. And they have mutual love for one another. Nilikha tayo
ng Diyos hindi dahil kailangan niya ng may mamahalin at magmamahal sa
kanya. No. The Father loves His Son sa simula’t simula pa. And this is a perfect,
pure, holy, and infinite love they have for each other.

Hirap tayo na maunawaan ang ganitong klaseng pag-ibig ng Ama sa Anak dahil
sa karanasan natin at sa paligid natin na kulang na kulang ang pagmamahal na
ipinapakita ng mga tatay sa kanilang mga anak. Ang iba laging wala, ang iba
nananakit pa, ang iba even if they try their best kulang pa rin. That is why this
truth of the Father’s love for His Son is good news for us. Ibig sabihin, ito rin ang
pag-ibig na dumadaloy sa atin sa pamamagitan ni Jesus. We don’t deserve this,
kasi nagrebelde tayo sa kanya, we didn’t love him with all our hearts, ipinagpalit
natin siya sa mga pekeng diyos. “But God shows his love for us in that while we
were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). “For God so loved the world, that
he gave his only Son” (John 3:16). “By this we know love, that he laid down his
life for us” (1 Jn. 3:16). Wala nang ibang pagmamahal na makapapupunan sa
puso nating uhaw na uhaw sa pagmamahal maliban sa pagmamahal na
nanggagaling sa Diyos sa pamamagitan ng Panginoong Jesus. Wala na.

The Father gives everything to His Son. The Father gives everything to us
through the Son. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things
into his hand.
Sa pag-ibig ng Ama sa kanyang Anak, nag-uumapaw ang kanyang kasiyahang
ibigay ang lahat sa kanyang Anak. This is a perfect model of what self-giving love
means. Lahat ng kapangyarihan, lahat ng karunungan, lahat ng kabutihan, lahat-
lahat sa Ama ay nasa Anak dahil ang Anak ay siyang Diyos mismo. Lahat ng
nilikha ng Diyos ay sa Anak. Lahat ng iniligtas ng Diyos ay ibinigay kay Jesus.

And this has huge implications for us. Ibig sabihin, Jesus is everything we need.
Everything we need we have in Jesus. Madalas kasi nagrereklamo tayo sa Diyos
‘pag di niya sinasagot ang prayers natin o hindi ibinibigay ang gusto natin. “Lord,
akala ko ba mahal mo ko, pero bakit wala pa akong asawa? wala pa akong
anak? wala pa akong trabaho? hindi pa gumagaling ang sakit ko? hindi pa ako
nakakabayad sa utang? hindi pa rin Christian ang asawa ko?” Sa kabutihan ng
Diyos, ibinibigay niya ang mga bagay na ‘yan. Pero hindi ibig sabihing kapag
hindi niya ibinigay, nagiging lesser ang love niya para sa atin. Because in his
love, he is committed to give us everything we need. And everything we need is
Jesus. At gusto niya na maramdaman natin ‘yan, marealize natin ‘yan, even if it
means losing the things or people we value the most.

The Father reveals Himself to His Son. The Father reveals Himself to us
through His Son. 34, “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God.”
Ang salita ni Jesus ay salita ng Diyos dahil sa lahat ng nalalaman ng Diyos ay
alam din niya. He himself is “the Word” (1:1). Ipinakilala niya ang Diyos sa atin,
“No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has
made him known” (1:18). Sabi pa niya, “All things have been handed over to me
by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows
the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him”
(Matt. 11:27). This is grace. Pwede naman niyang hayaan na lang tayo sa
ignorance natin, at tuluyang mapahamak. Pero pinili niyang ipakilala ang sarili
niya sa atin sa pamamagitan ng Panginoong Jesus. Kung ngayong taong ito, ang
prayer mo mas makilala mo ang Diyos, there is no other way but to look to Jesus
in his Word. When you read the Bible, Old Testament man ‘yan o New
Testament, look to Jesus and what he has done for you. Sabi ni Jesus sa mga
disciples niya, “If you had known me, you would have known my Father also…
Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:7, 9).
The Father sent His Son to the world. The Father sent us to the world
through His Son. 34, “For he whom God has sent utters the words of God.”
Ang “to send” ay galing sa Greek na apostello, kung saan galing ang “apostle.”
Ipinadala siya ng Diyos dahil merong misyon ang Diyos. Jesus came on a rescue
mission. “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10). “The
Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom
for many” (Matt. 20:28). Christianity is not about us, the lost sinners, finding God.
It is about God seeking us. Hindi ito pag-akyat sa hagdanan through our religious
good works, para makaabot sa Diyos. It is about God coming down to us in
Jesus. Naligtas tayo dahil tinupad ni Jesus ang misyong ibinigay sa kanya ng
Diyos, dahil ibinigay niya ang buhay niya para sa atin. And if we say we are
among those who are saved, and we are in Jesus, and we follow Jesus, ibig
sabihin we are in the same mission with him. Na puntahan ang marami pa na
naliligaw at nawawala at ibigay ang buhay natin para makarating sa kanila ang
balita ng pag-ibig ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ng ginawa ni Jesus sa krus para sa
kanila. Naparito si Jesus para iligtas tayo. Pupuntahan natin ang mga tao – even
to all nations – para ipakilalang si Jesus ang kanilang Tagapagligtas, nag-iisang
Tagapagligtas wala nang iba. That’s why we have a gospel ambition to plant
churches locally and globally. Mahirap, malaki, imposible sa tao.
The Father gives His Spirit to His Son. The Father gives His Spirit to us
through His Son.
Ipinagbuntis si Jesus through the Spirit. Sa kanyang baptism, the Spirit came
upon him. Sa buong ministry niya, in the power of the Spirit. Ibinigay ng Diyos
ang sarili niya sa Anak sa pamamagitan ng Espiritu na nasa kanya. Verse 34, “…
for he gives the Spirit without measure.” Sa NIV at NLT, “without limit.” The Spirit
is God’s unlimited power at work in the life and ministry of Jesus. Kaya natapos
niya ang misyong binigay ng Diyos, kaya nakayanan niya ang mamatay at akuin
ang kasalanan at parusa ng Diyos sa kasalanan nang mamatay siya sa krus.

Then think about this, kung si Jesus na Diyos ay kailangan ang Holy Spirit to
empower him for ministry, how much more tayong mga tao na likas na mahina at
limitado? So, the good news is, Jesus did not remain dead. Nabuhay siyang muli,
ibinigay ang Great Commission sa mga disciples niya to make disciples of all
nations, umakyat sa langit, at bumaba naman ang Espiritu sa kanila empowering
them to demonstrate and proclaim the gospel to the ends of the earth, kahit
buhay pa nila ang naging kapalit. At ang Espiritu na nasa kanila ay nasa atin din
na nakay Cristo. We can aim high sa gospel ambition na ‘to, we can make
sacrifices, we can realign our lives, we can give everything for the sake of the
gospel hindi dahil sa sarili nating powers, kundi dahil nasa atin ang Espiritu.
Without measure. Without limit. So go and stop making excuses, walang takot,
walang pag-aalinlangan.

Ngayong nalaman na po natin ang mga gospel realities na ito… we have the
mission of God, we have the power of God, we have the word of God, we have
the love of God, we have absolutely everything we need in Jesus. In Jesus, dahil
sa connection natin kay Jesus. 

Responding to Gospel Realities

So, how can we have this kind of “unbreakable connection with his Son”? By faith
and by faith alone. Verse 36 of our text, “Whoever believes in the Son has
eternal life…” Believe. Hindi ibig sabihing maniwala ka lang sa mga facts about
Jesus. Ibig sabihin, satisfied ka sa love na nanggagaling sa kanya. Pinakinggan
mo ang sinasabi niya at pinaniniwalaan mo. Pinanghahawakan mong ito ang
totoo, ito ang kailangan mo, wala nang iba pa. Nasasabik kang makita siya, mas
makilala pa, at sumunod sa kalooban niya. Nagtitiwala ka na sa sarili mo wala
kang magagawa, kundi sa pamamagitan lang ng kapangyarihang nanggagaling
sa kanya. By faith, you take hold of what Jesus has done for you.
At ang resulta? Eternal life. Hindi lang buhay na walang katapusan. It is not just
about the length of time, but the quality of life with God. Kaya sabi ni Jesus sa
prayer niya sa John 17, “And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true
God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (17:3). Not just to know him
intellectually, but intimately. Ang mas mapalapit sa kanya, ang mas mabusog ng
pagmamahal niya, ang mamuhay ayon sa kalooban niya, ang mapuspos ng
karunungan at kapangyarihang nanggagaling sa kanya. When Jesus is your
everything, Jesus is your life.

Pero merong tragic alternative. Dahil hindi lahat sumasampalataya. Merong mga
“unbelievers.” “Whoever does not obey the Son…” (3:36). Hindi naniniwala, hindi
sumusunod. Ang pinagtitiwalaan sarili nila. Ang sinusunod sarili nila. Simula sa
kasalanan nina Adan at Eba, yan ang kalagayan nating lahat, apart from the
grace of God in Jesus. At ang kahahantungan? Kamatayan. “…shall not see life.”
Not just physically. “…but the wrath of God remains on him.” Ang kamatayan ibig
sabihin separation from God. Kung pag-ibig ay nasa Diyos, ang pagtalikod sa
kanya ay mauuwi sa poot at parusa ng Diyos. Kung ang lahat-lahat at ang buhay
ay galing sa Diyos, ang talikuran siya ay nangangahulugang pagkawala ng lahat-
lahat sa iyo. This is a terrible tragedy. This is hell.

Lahat ng di kumikilala sa Diyos as revealed in Jesus, ito ang kahahantungan. 

Sa New Testament naman ganun din. Merong time sa ministry ni Jesus na

merong isang bayan na nagreject sa kanya. Gusto ng dalawa sa mga disciples
niya, tulad ni Elijah, na magbagsak ng apoy mula sa langit para wasakin ang
bayang iyon (Luke 9:51-56). Si Jesus naman ang tunay na Diyos at zealous sila
to make that known. Pero pinigilan sila ni Jesus. Bakit? Dahil sa mga oras na ito,
ang Diyos mismo ang mamamatay para patunayang siya lang ang tunay na
Diyos. That “God is true” (John 3:33). Ang lupit at bagsik ng poot ng Diyos sa
kanyang sariling Anak (after we reflect on the Father’s love for his Son, now this!)
ang naging patunay ng kanyang di nagmamaliw na pag-ibig para sa atin.
Knowing God is really a matter of life and death. Ganun din naman natin nakita
ang lalim ng pag-ibig ng Diyos: he was willing to die (and he did die!) in order to
make himself known to us.

At kung gusto talaga nating maipakilala ang nag-iisang tunay na Diyos (revealed
in Jesus) sa buong mundo, then we too must answer with “fire.” Pero ibang
klaseng apoy, yung apoy ng pag-ibig ng Diyos para sa atin, na ipinakita niya sa
pamamagitan ng kamatayan ni Jesus sa krus para sa atin (ESV Gospel
Transformation Bible notes). This is the gospel. That is why it is worth
proclaiming. It is worth giving our lives for.
