When simplifying a radical expression, you apply the following cases;

Case 1: This principle can be applied in Case 2: To multiply radicals of different indices,
multiplying radicals having the same index. it is necessary to change into equivalent
n xy = n x • n y , likewisen x • n y = n xy radicals with the same index.

Example: Example: Simplify 2 •3 2

Find the product of 18 xy 3 • 48 x 2 Solution:

Change 2 •3 2 to exponential form
Solution: Simplify first the radicand before
= (2)2 (2)3

multiplying

Apply laws of exponent

i.
18 xy 3 = 9 y 2 • 2 xy = 3 y 2 xy
= (2)2

ii. 48x 2 = 16 x 2 • 3 = 4x 3
Add similar fractions or Find the LCD
thus,
= (2)6

18 xy 3 • 48 x 2 = 3 y 2 xy • 4 x 3 Change to radical

( ) = (2 )6

= (3 y • 4 x ) 2 xy • 3
Simplify the radicand
= 12 xy 6 xy
= 6 25

= 6 32
