Every autumn, Channel 2 hosts a telethon to raise money for a good cause. Last year, thanks to your donations,
20
2
we raised over €100,000 for Save the Dogs, an organisation that rescues stray dogs from the streets of Romania.
This year, we’re attempting to reach an even more ambitious goal. We want to raise €1,000,000 – that’s right,
€1,000,000 – for WaterAid. WaterAid is an organisation that helps the inhabitants of water-challenged countries.
It operates in 28 different countries, helping people in Africa and North and South America who haven’t got clean
water. Clean water is vital to good health, but 1 out of 9 people on the planet haven’t got clean water near their
homes. That’s around 844 million people who have to travel long distances in order to get water for drinking and
washing! Children living in those conditions often can’t go to school because they have to help their families carry
water. Those who do go to school often become ill from using water that contains bacteria. Your money will help
WaterAid set up water tanks in villages, hand washing stations for families and clean toilets in schools. The
charity has helped millions of people so far, and we want to help the people there continue their good work. So
turn on your TV on Friday, 2nd November, and call us with your donation. We’ll be available from 8 am until
midnight, with entertainment by musicians and comedians during that time.

Ryan: What are you going to do on Christmas Day this year, Ella? Are you preparing dinner for your family
again?
Ella: No, this year we’re going to do something different.
Ryan: Really? Are you finally going on that skiing holiday?
Ella: We wanted to go skiing, but we changed our minds at the last minute. We’re going to the beach
instead.
Ryan: The beach? In the middle of winter?
Ella: It won’t be winter. We’re going to Australia. Christmas is in summer there!
2
Alex: How many brothers and sisters have you got, Lisa?
Lisa: I haven’t got any siblings. I’m an only child.
Alex: Wow, that’s hard for me to imagine. I was brought up in a large family.
Lisa: How many of you are there?
Alex: I’ve got two brothers and a sister. But two of my cousins also lived with us, so we were five kids at
home and me.
Lisa: That’s a lot. Your family dinners were probably really noisy. Not like our dinners for three!
3
Emma: Have you bought Sam a birthday present yet?
David: No, not yet. I wanted to buy him a scarf, but I couldn’t find a nice one.
Emma: I saw a gorgeous scarf when I was shopping. It was really soft – like the hat that I gave you last year.
David: I remember. You should have bought it.
Emma: Well, I already bought him a gift.
David: Did you get those cinema tickets in the end?
Emma: No, I didn’t. I bought him a hat. You liked yours, so I’m sure Sam will like his, too!
4
James: What do you feel like eating tonight? We could have something delivered.
Alice: What about Italian? I’m always in the mood for pasta.
James: I’ve had spaghetti twice this week. I’d rather not have Italian food again.
Alice: Do you feel like a curry? The Indian restaurant on Main Street makes great curries.
James: No, thanks. Indian food is too spicy for me. But I wouldn’t mind a pizza.
Alice: I thought you said you didn’t want Italian food.
James: I did. But I always have pineapple and prawns on my pizza. That’s not very Italian.
5
Shelly: Something here reminds me of Bonfire Night back home in London.
Lee: Why? Because of the fireworks?
Shelly: No, not really. A lot of countries have fireworks. Don’t you remember the Chinese New Year
celebrations at home?
Lee: Yes, I do. But what then? It couldn’t be the food. We never barbecue hamburgers on Bonfire Night in
the UK. We always roast potatoes.
Shelly: That’s it! It’s the smell of burning food. I guess Americans aren’t any better at cooking over fire than
we are!

My presentation is about an American holiday called Arbor Day. I first heard of this holiday when a friend of mine

went to the US and posted some photos of Arbor Day events on Facebook. I wanted to know more about it, so
I did some research online.
Long before Earth Day, there was Arbor Day. It is usually celebrated on the last Friday in April. It’s a celebration
of trees, and people all over the US plant trees on that day. I read that a newspaper editor, by the name of Julius
Sterling Morton, was a lover of all kinds of trees and planted thousands of trees in the fields around his house.
Years later, he proposed a tree-planting holiday for all the people of Nebraska. People loved the idea, and on
10th April, 1872, Nebraskans planted more than a million trees. The tradition, called Arbor Day, became so
popular that in 1885, it became a legal holiday in Nebraska. Soon, Arbor Day spread across the country –
although some states changed the date because of differences in the seasons. People even began planting trees
in memory of family and friends who had died. Thanks to Morton’s idea, there are woods all over the US, and
people have got a lovely way of honouring their loved ones.
