METHOD STATEMENT

POLYSEAL PS
GENERAL COMMENTS:
The performance of the material is always dependent on substrate conditions during the application. So the
following work conditions are to be followed for the optimum performance of the Product.

• Store the un-opened pails in a cool (preferably temperature controlled) environment, avoiding exposure to
direct sunlight. Protect from extreme temperatures such as frost, rain.
• The equipments for mixing such as the paddle mixer, mixing bowl should be kept cool so that they do not
impart additional temperature to the material when it is being mixed.
• Ensure that the surface temperature where the sealant will be applied is kept within the temperature range of
+10° C to +40° C.
• The sealant should not be applied if the humidity level is above 90%. Also the substrate temperature should
be 3° C above the dew point.
• Application should be done preferably when the day time atmospheric temperatures are considerably low.
The following Equipments are required during application:
o Protective clothing: Gloves, face mask, overalls, and goggles.
o Blasting equipment for surface preparation.
o Slow speed drill machine with less than 500 rpm.
o Mixing paddle.
o Barrel Gun.
o Follower plate.
o Tooling scrapper.
o Cleaning Solvent.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Surface Preparation:
• The substrate where the sealant will be applied should be clean, dry and sound. Remove all
dirt, laitance, grease, oil, traces of curing compound and all other contaminants. Sand/grit blasting is
recommended for cleaning the surface of all such deleterious materials. Use a vacuum or blower to remove
all the dust or debris from the joint after the surface cleaning.
• Joint edge repairs are to be carried out with a suitable repair mortar from the Polycrete range.
• In expansion joints, the filler board is to be cut and cleaned properly and a compressible
backing rod (closed cell polyethylene) of the suitable dimension is to be inserted into the joint up to the
designed depth, ensuring that there is no gap or void left at the base of the joint.
• For construction or contraction joints, a bond breaker or back up tape is recommended, but in
joints where hydrostatic pressure exists, only bond breaking tapes must be used.
• Apply a masking tape on either side of the joint, so that the material during application does
not spill over and spoil the aesthetics of the joint.
Priming:
• All prepared joints are to be primed with Polyprime PS. The primer is to be applied with a hard brush on
the two sides of the joint.

• The primer should be allowed to become tack free prior to the application of the sealant. In case the
application is delayed for more than 6 hours recoating is to be done.

Mixing:
Gun Grade:
• The gun grade sealant which is meant for vertical & overhead application is supplied together in the same
pail. The black hardener is placed on top of the white base. The quantities are pre-weighed which requires
only on site mixing. The material is to be mixed thoroughly with a paddle mixer fitted to a slow speed drill
till the formation of a uniform grey color.

• Ensure that the inside of the tin is scraped with a flat bladed tool so that there is no component on the sides
left unmixed.
Pouring Grade:
• The pouring grade sealant is supplied in two separate tins. Pour the contents of the hardener into the base
tin and mix thoroughly with a paddle mixer fitted to a slow speed drill till a uniform color is achieved.
Ensure that the bottom part is mixed properly as there is a tendency for that portion to be left un-mixed.
Note: Part mixing of the material is not at all recommended as it will affect the performance of the sealant.
Application:
• For the application of the Gun Grade sealant, place the single hole follower plate on top of the mixed
material in the pail. Open the nozzle end of the barrel gun and place it directly against the hole of the
follower plate. The material will fill the barrel gun when the follower plate is pressed slowly downwards and
the material starts oozing out from the hole of the plate.

• Gun the sealant into the joint firmly ensuring that there is no gap or void in between the sealant and the
backing rod. For application in vertical joints the filling should start from the bottom and continued to the
top. After the sealant has been filled into the joint, use a scrapper to remove the excess quantity and tool the
surface with suitable tooling equipment. It is recommended to dip the tooling equipment into a soap water
solution prior to tooling, so that a sooth surface and neat surface is achieved.

• In case of the pouring grade, pour the mixed material directly on the horizontal joint.

• After the application of the sealant immediately remove the masking tape from the sides of the joints.

• Clean all tools with the cleaning solvent immediately after use.
