The Zoological Parks Board of New South Wales is a NSW Government authority. The authority trades
as the Taronga Conservation Society Australia and operates Taronga Zoo in Sydney and the Western
Plains Zoo in Dubbo, NSW. Taronga Zoo was opened in 1916, covers 28 hectares and has about 4,000
animals on display. It had 1.5 million visitors in 2012-13, up 3.3% for the year. Western Plains Zoo was
opened in 1977, covers 788 hectares and has more than 450 animals on display. Over 228,000 visitors
attended the zoo in 2012-13, which was down slightly on the previous year. Taronga Conservation
Society Australia employs 508 workers and has recently upgraded many displays and attractions with
funding from the NSW Government. About 20.0% of the society's revenue is generated through NSW
Government grants. In 2012-13, redevelopment at Taronga Zoo as part of a 12-year, $221.0 million
partnership with the NSW Government was completed.
The zoos have increased animal numbers and displays over the past decade, including growth in the
number of animals from other countries. Western Plains Zoo obtained approval for the importation of
five Asian elephants as part of a regional cooperative conservation program. The organisation also
opened the Australian Marine Mammal Research Centre in Hobart with an emphasis on visitor
education and penguin and seal behaviour.
Financial performance
In the five years through 2014-15, IBISWorld forecasts that revenue for Taronga Conservation Society
Australia will decrease at an annualised 1.7% to $93.1 million, underperforming the overall industry.
This includes a decline of 32.0% in 2011-12, when government funding was cut due to unused grants in
the previous year. Revenue grew in 2012-13 as funding increased. Furthermore, Taronga Zoo had the
highest attendance numbers of any summer period in 2012-13 due to the opening of its Dinosaurs in
the Wild exhibition. This helped to boost revenue for the year.
