How can Drug Abuse affect you?
We all know that drugs are substances that causes a change in our body, physically or
psychologically. How about drug abuse? From its name it is the abuse in drugs but the question
is, how can drug abuse affect a person? Is it physically? Emotionally or mentally? Being aware of
its side effects in our body is a great advantage because just like the saying goes, “Prevention is
better than cure.”
Drug abuse is not a trivial matter. It’s a big issue that affect people in our society. Abusing
drugs is not okay and will never be. It’s effects in our body can be long lasting or even
permanent. Today there are more than 7 million people suffering because of drug abuse. In our
country, the Philippines, nearly half of drug abuse cases start from 15-19 years old but why are
they taking it? According to researches it’s because of peer pressure, curiosity, permissive
parenting and etc. People abusing drugs can be hard to quit doing what they do because drugs
change the brain in ways that makes quitting hard to do. Today there are more than 7 million
people suffering because of drug abuse. It weakens the immune system, causes heart
conditions, nausea, abdominal pain, weight loss and more. Drugs comes in different ways, it can
be injection, inhalation or ingestion and each also have different effects. Taking injection drugs
immediately impact because it flows in the bloodstream while inhalation have delayed effect.
These drugs may have dissimilar results in our body but they do have something in common,
because all misused drugs affect the brain. They cause large amount of dopamine, a
neurotransmitter that helps regulate emotions, feeling of pleasure and motivation to flood the
brain and results in “high”.
Abusing drugs is something that could ruin your body, health and one’s self. Knowing about
the consequences and aftermath of misusing it can be a big help because these are substance
that should not be treated like food or dessert you take every day, remember that taking it
illegally for your own purpose is abusing it that affects your body, mentally, emotionally and
physically, so let’s all be aware.
