NT990HDI Installation & Operation Manual

General.
The NT990HDI (Heading Data Interface) will convert virtually any Synchro or
Step by Step heading input signal to heading data transmitted on 1
(NT990HDI/1) or 2 (NT990HDI/2) isolated NMEA 0183 output channels. The
output channels may be independently set for IEC 61162/1 (4800 baud) or
IEC 61162/2 (34800 baud). Software version V2.4 and above supports both
AC and DC Synchro inputs.

A speed log giving 200 or 400 ppNm may also be connected to the NT990HDI
to provide NMEA 0183 speed information to proprietary systems. (Sentence
$VDVHW transmitted on output channel 1 only).

All inputs to the NT990HDI are Opto-Isolated to eliminate common mode and
loading problems.

The NMEA 0183 output sentences may be set for heading only ($HEHDT),
heading and Rate Of Turn ($HEROT), heading and speed ($VDVHW) or
heading, rate of turn and speed.

Heading information is permanently displayed on a 4-digit LED display with

variable intensity for night viewing whilst built in alarm functions triggered by
internal monitors warn of heading input or NMEA output failure.

An internal power-monitoring relay provides a volt free normally open (N.O.)

or normally closed (N.C.) contact to warn of power supply failure. Contact
rating 1A@30Vdc.

Suitable for 11-40Vdc power supply connection, the NT990HDI may be

powered up via the unit mounted ON/OFF keypad or from a remote location
via remote power up terminals also provided.

2.1 Gyro to NT990HDI Connection Note.

The NT990HDI is equipped with opto-isolated input stages that obviate

common mode connection problems and minimise loading on the gyro output
line.

Max Load 4mA/Line = 8mA total on step-by-step systems.

Max Load 2mA (Rotor) + 2mA (Stator) = 4mA total on Synchro systems.

NT990HDI synchronisation with gyro excitation frequencies in the range 50 –

500Hz is automatic.

2.2 Synchro Type Gyro Connections (Heading) to NT990HDI.

The NT990HDI Synchro operating mode is selected during calibration mode.

Synchro voltage (V SIG) range is defined by SW2 as detailed in section 3.

2.5 NT990HDI Output Connection to NMEA Receivers (Continued) ...

NT990HDI Application Note

Whilst the NMEA specification defines that all data receiving equipment shall
be internally equipped with opto isolated input stages, this feature does not
always exist in proprietary radars, trackplotters and pc’s etc.

Potential common mode problems arising from this are eliminated within the
NT990HDI via the use of opto isolated (1Kv) output stages in both NMEA
0183 output channels (50mA Sink per channel).

RS422 Compatible Outputs

Both NT990HDI output channels are equipped to drive differential inputs at
the receiver via signal lines A and B which move between 0V and +5V levels
with respect to receiver common.

It is essential therefore that 3 connections are

made for RS422 configurations as follows: -

RS232 Compatibility

Since the RS232 receiver specification calls for +/- 3V signal level
acceptance, the NT990HDI may be connected (output level effectively +/- 5V).

In this configuration, the screen should NOT be connected.
