FADE IN:
MOTHER
Take good care of these, they will be of service to you on your way.
The Princess puts cloth in her bosom, gets on her horse and sets off with her chambermaid.
CHAMBERMAID
If you are thirsty get off your horse yourself and lie down near the water
and drink. I won't be your servant.
Princess tries to drink water from creek but she can't drink water from the golden cup
PRINCESS
Oh lord.
DROPS OF BLOOD
If your mother knew this her heart would break in two.
The princess and chambermaid kept riding until the princess was thirsty again.
CHAMBERMAID
If you want a drink, get it yourself. I won't be your servant.
PRINCESS
Oh lord
DROPS OF BLOOD
If your mother knew this her heart would break in two.
Princess leans over the stream to take a sip of water but the towel with the drops of blood falls
out and floats down the stream. Without the drops of blood she is powerless.
The chambermaid takes the princesses horse and her royal clothes. The princess can't do
anything about it without the drops of blood. If the princess says anything about it she would be
killed on the spot. They make it to the kingdom and the prince runs over to the chambermaid
because he thinks that's his bride. The fake princess went up into the kingdom while the real
princess was left at the gates.
The old king gave her work with a boy named Little Conrad to help tend the geese.
CHAMBERMAID
Dearest husband I beg you to do me a favor
PRINCE
I will do so gladly
CHAMBERMAID
Then send for a knacker and have the head of the horse which I rode
here cut off for it angered me on the way.
OUTSIDE KINGDOM
The chambermaid was worried that the horse would tell of what she did. The princess
paid the knacker a piece of gold to put Faladas head on the gates which is the entrance to the
kingdom that the princess has to pass every day to tend the geese. In the morning when her
and Conrad pass the gates she says
PRINCESS
Alas Falada hanging there!
FALADA
Alas young queen passing by if this your mother knew her heart would
break in two.
OUTSIDE COUNTRYSIDE
Conrad and the princess go out into the country with the geese. The princess pulls down her
hair and starts to brush it, Conrad saw how beautiful it was and wanted a few strands but the
Princess said.
PRINCESS
Blow wind blow take Conrad's hat and make him chase it until I
have braided my hair and tied it up again.
INSIDE KINGDOM
Conrarad came back and was not not happy and would not talk to the Princess. The next
morning when they went to tend the geese the Princess said.
OUTSIDE KINGDOM
PRINCESS
Alas Falada hanging there!
FALADA
Alas young queen passing by if your mother knew her heart would
break in two.
OUTSIDE COUNTRYSIDE
The princess sits in the field again and starts combing her hair, Conrad tried to take some again
so she said.
PRINCESS
Blow wind blow take Conrad's hat and make him chase it until I
have braided my hair and put it up again.
The wind blew, taking Conrad's hat and sending him running for it. The evening they went home
Conrad went to the king and said.
INSIDE KINGDOM
CONRAD
I won't tend the geese with that girl anymore.
KING
Why not?
CONRAD
Because she angers me.
KING
You must tell me exactly what she does.
CONRAD
In the morning when we pass underneath the gateway with the flock
There is a horses head on the wall, and she says to it Alas Falada
hanging there! and the head replies Alas young queen passing by
if this your mother knew her heart would break in two. She also
talks to the wind and it takes my hat away.
The king had a plan to watch the girl as she tends the geese with Conrad. He saw her talk to the
horse head and later saw her talk to the wind and make it take Conrad's hat away. When the girl
came home the king asked her why she does these things.
INSIDE KINGDOM
PRINCESS
I am not allowed to tell you nor can I reveal my sorrows to any human
being for I have sworn under the open heaven not to do so and if I had
Not sworn I would have been killed.
KING
If you will not tell me your sorrows then tell them to the iron stove there.
PRINCESS
Here I sit abandoned by the whole world although Im the daughter of
A king. A false Chambermaid forced me to take off my royal clothes
and now she has taken place with my bridegroom. Now I have to do
common work as a goose girl, if my mother knew this her heart would
break in two.
The king was standing outside the stove and heard everything.
KING
Come out of the stove.
KING
What punishment a person deserved who had deceived her master in
such and such a manner.
KING
What sentence does such a person deserve?
CHAMBERMAID
She deserves no better than to be stripped stark naked and put in a barrel
that is studded inside with sharp nails, have two white horses hitched to it
and they should drag her along through one street after another until she
Is dead.
KING
You are the one and you have pronounced your own sentence thus it
Shall be done to you.
Ater the sentence had been carried out the young king married his true bride and both of them
ruled over their kingdom in peace and happiness.
