The ‘Disappearing Cross’ Experiment

16.0 g dm-3 Sodium Thiosulphate (VI)
0.5 mol dm-3 Sulphuric Acid
Stop clock
Measuring Cylinders
250 cm3 beaker
Sheet of paper with a cross drawn on it
Procedure
(a) Using a measuring cylinder, 50 cm3 of Sodium Thiosulphate solution
was poured into the beaker provided.
(B) 50cm3 of sulphuric acid was added to this solution and the time
taken was noted.
(C) The beaker was then placed over the cross and the time taken for
the cross to disappear when viewed from above was recorded.
(D) the Mixture was discarded and the beaker washed.
(E) Step C was repeated, using instead the thiosulphate / water mixtures
as shown in the table below and noting in each case the time taken for
the cross to be completely obscured
