Activity: Plan your next steps
Choose one goal you have for this week. Draw a ladder on a
piece of paper, and write your goal at the top of the ladder.

● What steps will you need to take to reach that goal?


Put them on the rungs.

SMART Goals
Specific – Specific and Detailed
The goal should describe a specific, observable outcome.
Measurable – Measurement Criteria
To achieve goals, individuals must be able to measure and showcase their progress.
Attainable – Achievable Criteria
For goals to be achievable, individuals must identify and have the needed resources and
information to complete the goal.
Realistic – Manageability Criteria
Goals need to be described in terms that make it possible for individuals to achieve in scope
and time. For goals to be realistic and manageable, they must also be relevant--goals that
individuals want to achieve and are willing to work toward.
Timeframe – Answers “by when?” Criteria
Due dates help individuals gauge what tasks need to be completed and by when.
SMART Goals: Example
• GOAL: To write my dissertation on the study of televised advertising of sugary
drinks on the beverage preferences of preschool children
Specific – What, exactly, is it that I want to Write the section of the introduction that links

● Pick a strategy that works best for you and make it something that you
see on a regular basis:
o Phone or paper calendar
o Whiteboard or bulletin board at home
o Reverse calendaring

Creating Balance
● Write down the things that you want to do or accomplish.
○ Put on Post-Its in places where you can see them daily.
○ Keep a research/inspiration journal.
○ Keep a calendar.
○ Use the notes section of your phone.
○ Text yourself your goals for the day or week.

● Be intentional about building time for your personal life.

● Reward yourself, but also be honest and realistic.

reward yourself? Do you write in a comfortable place?

your progress, lack of progress?
● Since you determined a topic? Defended your thesis? Began writing this
chapter?
○ What has contributed to any strengths or weaknesses you've
experienced during the different phases of your degree? What has
fueled your success? What has hindered your efforts? Ask yourself:
"what do I need to be successful?"
