DERIVATIVES OF TRIGONOMETRIC AND INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

Learning Competency: Apply the differentiation rules in computing the

derivative of trigonometric and inverse trigonometric
functions

A function that has a derivative is said to differentiable. A derivative is computed

by the operation of differentiation. Theorems that help perform this computation
simplify the task of finding derivatives.

DERIVATIVE OF TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

If 𝑢 is a differentiable function of 𝑥; then:

𝑫𝒙 (𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒖) = 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐨𝐭 𝒖) = −𝐜𝐬𝐜 𝟐 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖

𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒖) = − 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝒖) = 𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝒖 𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖

𝑫𝒙 (𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝒖) = 𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝟐 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐬𝐜 𝒖) = − 𝐜𝐬𝐜 𝒖 𝐜𝐨𝐭 𝒖 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖

Example 1. Differentiate 𝒚 = 𝐬𝐢𝐧(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)

Solution:
𝒚′ = 𝑫𝒙 [𝐬𝐢𝐧(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)]
𝒚′ = 𝐜𝐨𝐬(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏) ∙ 𝑫𝒙 (𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)
𝒚′ = 𝐜𝐨𝐬(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏) ∙ (𝟑)
𝒚′ = 𝟑 𝐜𝐨𝐬(𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)

Example 2. Differentiate 𝒚 = 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒙𝟐

Solution:
𝒚′ = 𝑫𝒙 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒙𝟐
𝒚′ = − 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒙𝟐 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒙𝟐

𝒚′ = − 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒙𝟐 ∙ 𝟐𝒙
𝒚′ = −𝟐𝒙 𝐬𝐢𝐧 𝒙𝟐

Example 3. Differentiate 𝒚 = 𝐭𝐚𝐧(𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)

Solution:
𝒚′ = 𝑫𝒙 [𝐭𝐚𝐧(𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)]
𝒚′ = 𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝟐 (𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏) ∙ 𝑫𝒙 (𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)
𝒚′ = 𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝟐 (𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏) ∙ (𝟒)
𝒚′ = 𝟒𝐬𝐞𝐜 𝟐 (𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)

DERIVATIVE OF INVERSE TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS

If 𝑢 is a differentiable function of 𝑥; then:

𝟏 −𝟏
𝑫𝒙 (𝐬𝐢𝐧−𝟏 𝒖) = 𝟐
∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐬𝐜 −𝟏 𝒖) = ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖
√𝟏−𝒖 𝒖√𝒖𝟐 −𝟏

−𝟏 𝟏
𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐨𝐬−𝟏 𝒖) = 𝟐
∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐬𝐞𝐜 −𝟏 𝒖) = ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖
√𝟏−𝒖 𝒖√𝒖𝟐 −𝟏

𝟏 −𝟏
𝑫𝒙 (𝐭𝐚𝐧−𝟏 𝒖) = 𝟏+𝒖𝟐 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖 𝑫𝒙 (𝐜𝐨𝐭 −𝟏 𝒖) = 𝟏+𝒖𝟐 ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒖

Example 1. Differentiate 𝒚 = 𝐬𝐢𝐧−𝟏 (𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)

Solution:
𝟏
𝒚′ = ∙ 𝑫𝒙 (𝟑𝒙 + 𝟏)
√𝟏−(𝟑𝒙+𝟏)𝟐

𝟏
𝒚′ = ∙𝟑
√𝟏−(𝟗𝒙𝟐 +𝟔𝒙+𝟏)

𝟑
𝒚′ =
√𝟏−𝟗𝒙𝟐 −𝟔𝒙−𝟏

𝟑
𝒚′ =
√−𝟗𝒙𝟐 −𝟔𝒙

Solution:
𝒚′ = 𝑫𝒙 𝐜𝐨𝐬 𝒙𝟐
−𝟏
𝒚′ = ∙ 𝑫𝒙 𝒙 𝟐
√𝟏 − (𝒙𝟐 )𝟐
−𝟏
𝒚′ = ∙ 𝟐𝒙
√𝟏 − 𝒙𝟒
−𝟐𝒙
𝒚′ =
√𝟏 − 𝒙𝟒

Example 3. Differentiate 𝒚 = 𝐭𝐚𝐧−𝟏(𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)

Solution:
𝟏
𝒚′ = ∙ 𝑫𝒙 (𝟒𝒙 − 𝟏)
𝟏+(𝟒𝒙−𝟏)𝟐
𝟏
𝒚′ = 𝟏+𝟏𝟔𝒙𝟐 −𝟖𝒙+𝟏 ∙ 𝟒
𝟒
𝒚′ = 𝟏𝟔𝒙𝟐 −𝟖𝒙+𝟐
𝟒
𝒚′ = 𝟐(𝟖𝒙𝟐 −𝟒𝒙+𝟏)

𝟐
𝒚′ = 𝟖𝒙𝟐−𝟒𝒙+𝟏
