People & Culture
A NNUA L R EP O RT 20 17

Toronto is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the

world — we welcome new immigrants from around the globe
daily, and our population of around 2.8 million speaks over
200 different languages. TIFF is proud to represent this
dynamic community both within our staff and through our
diverse community initiatives. “Transforming the way people
see the world through film” is our mission statement, and
we endeavor to inspire audiences to express themselves and
their cultural perspectives through the shared experience
of the moving image — regardless of ethnicity, ability, or
socioeconomic status.

The Films of Andrei Tarkovsky

Poetry of Apocalypse: The Films of

Andrei Tarkovsky was the first Toronto
retrospective in 15 years devoted to the
visionary Russian auteur. Comprised
of eight of Tarkovsky’s works, including
multiple 35mm prints and three digital
restorations, this TIFF Cinematheque series
enjoyed multiple sold-out screenings and
full theatrical runs, two of which lasted
several weeks: sci-fi classics Solaris (1972)

In collaboration with the British Film

Institute, and supported by the Hal Jackman
Foundation, TIFF’s Black Star retrospective
celebrated 100 years of Black excellence
onscreen, featuring films and special talks
exploring Black stardom, erasure, and
radicalization, and the Black experience
historically. Highlights included Lime Kiln
Club Field Day (1913), the first known film
with an all-Black cast; In the Heat of the Night
(1967), featuring a searing performance
by Sidney Poitier; and Annie (2014), starring
Quvenzhané Wallis. Clement Virgo’s Rude
(1995) and Home Feeling: Struggle for

filmmakers as the stars of Black cinema.

As the film industry moves to ensure

more equitable representations of women,
TIFF reflected on the careers of some of
the women who were able to create space
for themselves. Hollywood star-turned-
filmmaker Ida Lupino was the only woman
directing films in Hollywood during the 1940s
and 1950s. TIFF’s retrospective on Lupino’s
work highlighted her greatest achievements

TIFF Cinematheque continued its summer

tradition of highlighting films from abroad.
The Summer in France programme included
two tantalizing retrospectives curated by
James Quandt: a centenary celebration of
Jean-Pierre Melville, the French master known
for his tersely efficient thrillers; and a survey
of 24 French-crime classics from esteemed
filmmakers such as Robert Bresson, Jean-Luc
Godard, and Claude Chabrol. These series
invited audiences to trace the traditions of
popular crime movies back to their roots
in French cinema, whose influence can be
seen in the works of such contemporary
auteurs as John Woo and Quentin Tarantino.
