VERIFICATION OF THE ADEQUACY OF PROPOSED
CLASS NP2 CONCRETE HUME PIPES WITH MINIMUM
COVER OF 0.6m

Class NP2 concrete hume pipes have proposed in the pipe culverts and encasements are provided only if
the soil cover is less than 0.6m. This report provides calculations to check the adequacy of class NP2
pipes with this minimum cover without encasements. It is to be noted that with the increase of soil cover,
the effect of vehicle live load decrease and become negligible. Encasement is provided once the pipe
strength is insufficient and then the pipe encasement will be designed to resist the full load.

Average pressure intensity of the subsoil plane (w L) = P*g*If/ALL

For AASHTO HS 20 loading,

P = 7250 kg g = 9.81 ms-2

If = 1.1

ALL = (0.25+1.75*H)*(0.5+1.75*H)
= 2.02 m2
Therefore,
2
wL = 38.83 kN/m

Total live load acting on the pipe (WT) = wL*L*SL

L = Min {(0.5+1.75H); actual pipe length} taking equal to 0.5+1.75H

= 1.55 m

SL = Min {(0.25+1.75H); Bc}

For 600mm pipe

SL,600 = 0.69 m

For 900mm pipe

SL,600 = 1.01 m

Therefore,

W T,600 = 41.52 kN

W T,900 = 60.78 kN

Live load acting on pipe per linear meter WL = WT/Le

Le = L+1.75*0.75Bc
