Design Check of Concrete Hume Pipe
Design Check of Concrete Hume Pipe
Class NP2 concrete hume pipes have proposed in the pipe culverts and encasements are provided only if
the soil cover is less than 0.6m. This report provides calculations to check the adequacy of class NP2
pipes with this minimum cover without encasements. It is to be noted that with the increase of soil cover,
the effect of vehicle live load decrease and become negligible. Encasement is provided once the pipe
strength is insufficient and then the pipe encasement will be designed to resist the full load.

Above calculations checked the adequacy of two major pipe diameters proposed for the pipe
culverts and it is confirmed that class NP2 hume pipes are adequate to use as shown in the
drawing.
